I have a recently purchased a 1996 talon awd. It has a manual transmission. I washed it after driving it home. It has been sitting in my garage for a few weeks. I went to start it today, put it in nuetral and started it. When I let out the clutch it wanted to pull forward and stall out. I'm able to drive it forward in first and reverse it in reverse. I seem to be able to shift it into all of the gears but no matter what it won't go into neutral. I put the shifter into 3rd when I parked it in my garage which is level. Could the 3 rd 4th shift fork be broken? The cables seem to move fine on the transmission. The car has 226000 miles on it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

You said you started it in neutral...please clean up your post and be more clear about what is happening.

Did it drive normal on the way home when you first bought it?

Yes when I parked it I put it into gear. It is parked in a level garage. I did wash it before I parked it so I wonder if one of the shift cables could be frozen. When I have the shifter in neutral and let out on the clutch it wants to stall and move forward like it is in a higher gear. I can move it in first and back up in reverse. I haven't road tested it since there is a huge pile of snow in front of my garage

With the car off can you move through all the gears freely? When you are in neutral can you move it side to side? Your first post states you can't go into neutral , than you go on to say you seem to be able to move it in 1st and reverse.

I think hes saying that he started the car, and while his foot was still on the clutch pedal, he moved the shifter over to the nuetral position. As he went to release the clutch pedal, his car began to stall while trying to move...... I think youre on the right track with starting at the linkages. You may need to get another set of eyes to help you check your shift linkages.

Yes correct I can move the shifter whether it's running or not. I am thinking maybe a cable is froze up. I will have a friend shift it so I can watch the transmission. Hopefully I won't have to dig deeper into the transmission. Thanks for your replies.

One thing to help is to unplug the clutch start switch, so that way you can start the car without pressing in the clutch. This will tell you immediately if you are in neutral or not as the car will surge forward LOL.

Alternatively, whenever you think you are in neutral, try to push the car with the e-brake off, as if the car is in neutral it will roll but will not when it's still in gear.

I have never really heard of this problem so I hope you get it worked out. Seems as though something to do with the cables is likely. Good luck.

Might also want to try putting it in neutral with the car off, that way it would eliminate the clutch hydraulic system as a culprit.

Good luck

Good luck

I was going to say unplug the clutch sensor as well, but starting the car with the gear engaged could potentially damage the transmission. I would also check at the shifter base for faulty links or loose bolts.

This is one I have never heard of.

First thing to do is while engine off have someone shift while you, under the hood, watch the cables and tranny levers. Make sure cable casings are secure against tranny and not moving yet tranny levers move all the way.
