Help please, I have been working on my 91 eagle tsi fwd 5sp for a year now and finally got it on the road. Took it out for a drive after putting it back together and it did great until about mile 50. The engine is on a fresh rebuild so I wasn't hammering it or anything. It started by being difficult to go into 4th gear so I started home and stopped by autozone to pick up some gear oil to drain and fill with fresh fluid since I hadn't done that yet. After picking up supplies I headed home and that's when it happen, was downshifting at yield and it started to buck and died, I push the clutch in and coasted into the parking lot. Tried starting after parking with clutch in and I started fine. I figured it was in neutral and let the clutch out and it died as if it was in gear. Tried starting without pushing in clutch and it will just bump like its in gear. I can move the gear shifter around and it feels as if it is going through the gears and if I release the emer. Brake and put the shifter in neutral I can push it back in forth like its in neutral and if I engage a gear it acts like its in gear and stops. I went ahead and got the trailer and while loading it I noticed that when pushing backwards it was smooth and quite but when pushing forward it is smooth but makes a little noise kinda like ticking. I contacted the previous owner and he did say it was from pick n pull but he had put 350 miles on it before he started sailing parts off of it. I have removed the boot off of the fork for the pressure plate and the forks are flat. He also said the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing were all new. I'm at a lost so any help will be appreciated.

Take it to a mechanic, is the best advise I can give you, or start going threw the whole clutch system, bleeding it, etc. Change all fluids and then if its still not working I would get a professional to diagnose it in person. Preferably someone who knows dsm's or atleast turbo'd cars.. If he did the clutch, pressure plate and t.o.b, Maybe the flywheel died?

Flywheel is new also and clutch has been bleed, I can watch the slave press the fork to the pressure plate. I took out all the old fluid from the system and bleed it for a long time to ensure no air or old fluid.

I had a similar problem in a FWD 90 laser. I ended up selling the car but the diff shot out of the trans for the next owner. I sold it unable to move under its own power. Sounds like you need a trans rebuild or a new trans.

From your description it sounds like an internal trans problem but I would rule nothing out until I looked over everything else since that is the most expensive part. I had a lot of shifting problems in a 92 talon I had years back and all it was was a crack in between two of the springs on the new clutch disc I got from autozone causing the whole hub to press in not just the fingers. They replaced it for free and worked great till the timing belt shredded but that's another story.

Thanks for the replies and tips, all linkage seems to be fine but I need to do some more digging. Was hoping not to have to pull the Trans but it is what it is. Any other help or advice is appreciated.

Update on trans. This was the only fluid i didnt change or check like a dummy, the tranny was almost empty on fluid so i am thinking something is messed up internally. dont see any leaks to speak of from the tranny but i will be pulling it. kinda makes you want to kick yourself. when it did start acting up i did go directly to parts store for fluid. always a day late and a dollar short. :(

Had kinda the same issue with my 2g, except mine died out in the driveway LOL. I had recently replaced my clutch, so it came to a surprise when that happened. When I once again dropped my tranny, I barely had any fluid in it :ohdamn: I had used the wrong type of fluid to fill it up, used gear oil instead of the Texaco (synchromesh is what I used same thing) Noob move I know LOL, but the car been running like a champ for almost a year ever since. I'm guessing your tranny takes different fluid than mine since it's a different year, different engine, but hopefully you're lucky like I was that your tranny just ran bone dry and no internal damage was done ;)
