I just picked up my Eclipse this weekend. Its 1991 GSX. It has some little problems here and there, idle surge, stuff like that. Otherwise, its OK.

Anyway, and yes I searched, If the car is running and sitting in neautral, and i let the clutch out, I get a whirling whining sort of noise. I plan to change the gear oil this week, and do the other maintenance things too. I'm wondering if a gear oil change will stop this noise, or if maybe its a bearing gone bad. Also, when I try to go into reverse, the car wont roll at all, and if I let out the clutch the engine will just bog down. Other times, it will grind then pop in, or go in with no problem. Any Ideas on this?

Sounds like your TOB(throw out bearing) is going bad. You might want to change the gear oil anyways as its always a good job to do a tune up/fixing the problems the previous owner left behind anyway. As for reverse its never really been easy to get our cars into reverse but you might want to check to see if your shifter cable are aligned properly(there is a vfaq article about it) and another trick I found helpful is the put the car into 3rd or 4th and then shift into reverse.

Alright, thanks! I'll be disconnecting the switch on the clutch to help save the throw out bearing. I want to get it all fixed if that the problem, but I'm short on cash and time. I'll see if the fluid change helps.

Also, sometimes the "whirring" noise can be the front input bearing. The F5m22 and 33 are both blessed with this. If you do ever pull your trans, pull the back cover and check/tighten the two big nuts on the shafts as these have a way of working loose and causing havoc. I have one I'm dealing with right now.

Good Luck
