I have a 91 TSi 5MT AWD.
Replaced the transmission (for a broken 2nd gear and worn syncros) after I bought it with a rebuilt/used transmission. It worked fine for a while and then started making an odd grinding noise which I discovered to be:
The bottom trans cover had the middle shaft's nut spin off and grind into the cover and bust a hole through it. Luckily I had a spare (top) which I cleaned up and installed correctly after properly torquing and notching the nut.
So I took it for a drive and came back to it leaking oil out the bellhousing. The oil was cool so I presumed trans oil (confirmed after smelling). So now I'm at the point of "where is this leak coming from". It's been suggested to me that it could be the input shaft seal which makes sense as if one of the shafts had play it could have prematurely worn that seal down.
If this is indeed the problem, I've got the following pages from the service manual:

So my questions are thus:
Any help would be very appreciated.

- Is that the best way to replace it? If not is there an easier method?
- Any suggestions for what else it could be?
Any help would be very appreciated.
