Hello Tuners!

I have a dilemma here, my transmission was making it really bad noises and I took it to the shop that I have been working with for other minor stuff. Now after cracking it open they found that the teeth of several gears were broken. After waiting for so long they giving me the option of getting new internal parts to fix it quoting me $1500 just for parts or $1000 for another used transmission. I still have to get a new clutch on top.

Now I did not know that our 2g AWD transmission would go for so much. Is this accurate? What do you guys suggest me to do?

That is completely accurate when you run your transmission into the ground. When the shaft bearings wear out it starts allowing the input shaft and intermediate shaft gear clusters to have excessive bearing end play and the shafts push away from each other and can damage the gears and the shafts and then the other components. It's nearly $1100 just for the replacement input shaft, intermediate shaft , 2/3/4 gearsets and center diff housing. That's before synchros, bearings, hub and sliders / keys / springs, shift forks, snaprings, needle bearings, center diff components, etc.

I would say most of my customers with this kind of nightmare have bills between $2000-3000 when its all said and done including cleaning and labor costs. Before shipping costs or shop install / removal costs.

Typically you can find a 2G trans for less than $1000, but it is also unknown condition, unless recently serviced with paperwork on it. But with that said they are getting harder and harder to find.

Just make sure if you decide to swap in another transmission to confirm that it is the proper final drive for your application. If you have a W5M33-2-MUZT you will need to reuse the 57-tooth front diff ring gear from your bad transmission into another 2g transmission if you find a W5M33-2-NPZT transmission (it has a 58-tooth front diff ring gear). The front diff ring gear tooth count associates back to the transfer case final drive differences. 1991-1996 23-spline transfer cases are a 1.090 ratio 24/22 tooth gearset and work with the 58-tooth USDM front diff ring gear found in the W5M33-2-NPZT transmission which was used from 1995-1996. The 97-99 1.074 29/27 tooth gearset transfer case works only with the 57-tooth USDM front diff ring gear found in the W5M33-2-MUZT transmission used from 1997-1999.

The stamping to let you know which version you have is on the top of the bellhousing between the top two mounting bolt holes on the squarish flat spot.

NPZT = 1995-1996
MUZT = 1997-1999

If you are buying a NPZT transmission, then you either need to tear it apart as well and swap the final drive to the 57-tooth ring gear (ideally with matching speed sensor so your speedometer is accurate), or you need to also swap the transfer case to a 1.090 ratio 24/22 tooth unit (1991.6-1996 are 23-spline 1.090 ratio units ; pop the side cover off to inspect the tooth count of the drive gear to confirm if you have a 22 tooth or a 27 tooth drive gear to determine the final drive ratio).
