I've never seen what one of these transmission filters look like what shape would you say this one is in?

Not sure what you're looking for?

It's dirty as is the pan and likely the valve body too.
I assume the "dirt" is from the friction material versus any metal that might be stuck to the magnets in the pan.

How does the fluid smell?

Fluid looks DARK. As said, does it smell "burnt"?
