1G Trans Cooler

Whats up guys i am installing a trans cooler on my 1ga. I went with a Derale 13614 it is 10x12 i mounted it where the original smic went. I quickly tried to see if bumper fits and feels like it will need some trimming on the lower lip area.

So after further inspection the cooler hangs to low for my liking. Do any of you guys have experience mounting it in between intercooler and radiator? I have about 4-5 inches of space in between the 2 and i would mount it to the fmic to avoid as much of the radiator heat as possible.

Is it not possible to tuck it back where the oem intercooler would sit? Then it would have its own cool air stream.

I guess i could make some brackets to make it fit back there i just wondered if mounting it behind the fmic would be good or bad. I would mount it on the cold side of the fmic to avoid potential heat soak but now that i think about it from what ive read the trans cooler is a hot part and would likely soak the fmic with unneeded heat.

The way I see it, the incoming ambient air picks up heat with each heat exchanger it passes through, with the amount of heat transferred proportional to the temperature difference. So if the fmic adds some heat, then the trans cooler would not be able to shed as much heat. After the trans cooler, which would add some amount of heat, the radiator would see even hotter air over a portion of its surface, and would be less able to shed heat. That’s all basic thermodynamics. I’ve honestly never understood how some people use the term “heat soak”, where it sometimes is referred to something that gets too hot, and stops transferring heat. Exactly the opposite is true, though a heat exchanger can lack sufficient contact area or incoming cooler air to shed enough heat to lower temperatures to a desired point.
Placing your trans cooler on the side would give it cooler air (though perhaps not as much total air flow) than behind your fmic, and would allow your radiator to also see more cooler air.
