For the last week or so my 1g (eclipse gs) has been having a high pitchd sound when I start to drive in 1st gear. It will squeal pretty loud then stop once I have shifted into 2nd gear. Today unfortunately it started happening a little in 2nd gear also. I have no knowledge of transmissions. I do not believe it is the clutch ( I installed a Exedy stage I about 5 months ago). Today after 2nd gear started acting stupid I decided to drain the tranny and see what the fluid looked like... and to my surprise I found pieces of metal in the oil (about the size of the prong on the tip of RCA plugs). I know that isn't normal. The car drives fine and doesn't slip. I just sounds like crap. In addition every now and then it sounds like pieces of something are swirling around inside the transmission case. Does anybody have any ideas what it could be from my description? This is my only car and need it for work/school/fun. I just need direction so I can know if it is worth getting rebuilt or if I should find a new trans.

Sounds like the shaft nuts may have came loose. Pull the outside case off the tranny and check to see if the nuts have came loose.

Of course this picture will look different from your transmission, because you car is N/T and this is an AWD tranny pictured. What will be different is the third shaft (the one not pointed at), you will not have it.

But since the sound only happens in first, and now second, it could be something else. What I mentioned above is a good place to start and can happen sometimes. You can check those nuts without even dropping the tranny.

what color is the metal pieces? brass color ones would be syncros, others could be gears or bearings. I agree with sleeper 98gst to check that part first for 36mm nuts

it isn't brass. Only way I can describe it is like sheet metal looking. But i'm 100% it isn't brass. If the nut came loose what damage could be done? I will probably pull it appart this weekend since I dont have school or work.

If it is the nut, it would be shavings from that outside casing. Which does have a sheet metal color to it. Also that would explain the noise.

I did the test that was posted. I didn't get any oddities in 5th gear though. :( I don't have time to rebuild so I think that I will have to find a new trans. God I love my DSM but it is times like this that make me wanna........wanna...... buy another dsm :) god i love my dsm

Sorry to hear that it wasn't the "best case scenario".
