On my way to school this morning the car would engage into 1st gear but after i got the shifter into 2nd and the make the switch into 3rd, the shifter would not go into 3rd at all. I went back home in 2nd after the ordeal and parked the car hoping nothing else will happen. Car wont go to 1st 3rd or 5th. Do you have any ideas to what happened? I suspect maybe it's the shift linkage but other than that i have no idea.

see if there is anything lodged where your clutch linkage is or your tranny may have pucked on ya thats a dsm tranny for ya:barf:

Probably the syncros like all others. If you have time and a little cash then go for the rebuild but be warned, it aint easy. Best off with a swap from a boneyard and see what happens.

Whoa, before you go dropping big bucks on another trans why don't you pop the hood and have a look? I bet it something simple like the shift cables are out of adjustment for some reason.

Check where the cables attach to the trans, and check the backet that holds the cables. Make sure the bracket bolts are tight. There are four of them.

Also check the cable ends where they attach to the shift lever. Just pop off the leather boot around the shift knob (or is that a shift handle?) and have a look. You'll see two turnbuckles. Try to spin them with your fingers, they shouldn't move. If you haven't found anything wrong yet, try adjusting the shift cables like it shows on the VFAQ
www.VFAQ.com/mods/shifter3.html

Since you have trouble getting into 1/3/5, I would suggest turning the turnbuckle to shorten it a little.

Not always that though but give it a try, i still would bet money on it that its the trans and not the linkages.

I will put money on the cables. The cable is not pulling for some reason. I see no other reason why those three gears would go out. Second gearis usually the first to go followed closly by third gear and I dont know anyone that has had fifth take a shit on them. Check the cables cause that is free and they cheap to replace.

I had that problem at one point, My car wouldn't go into first gear, turns out I busted a shift fork. Had to have my transmission rebuilt because the broke fork went into the gears and shot our my case blowing a hole in it. You might get lucky and have a just a cable problem, but if it isn't that, I would be careful about driving it until you have it looked at by someone.

yup yup its turned out to be the cable. It ws so bad it looked like barbed wire that ate up a lego or something. Now 1st doesnt grind as much but I have noticed that 2nd grinds sometimes now but after everything warms up the grind goes away. Any idea for this?

Try to change the fluid. I had the same problem when I bought my AWD car it would grind into second when cold. I put some GM fluid in it and it when away. It will depend on how bad you synchros are but that should help. If it doesnt then, I hate to say it, but it will need a rebuild to fix those grinds.
