So.....I have a trashed tranny and bought another used one...so now I have 2 F5M33s. I cracked the case on the one I bought and it looks solid but I would like to attempt a rebuild...never done it before....I lust to learn. Poured over the past threads on rebuilds and book marked a lot of info. I understand the concepts of preload and how to measure. I have all the tools except for one.......experience. I am going to continue to run this thread in hopes that a mentor will guide me threw the build. Yes I will have a lot of stupid questions but thus is the hallmark of a good student. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

I am getting ready to purchase a Quaife LSD and need to order a rebuild kit. My first question is about which kit to buy. The sync gears in the blown tranny look about brand new and I would like to use them in the one I am rebuilding to save a little money....then I would only have to order a bearing and seal kit. Upon inspection there is no evidence that any broken metal affected these gears.....Can I do this???? Please see pics for detail.

If the cones fit they should be fine. If I recall some of the sleeves changed and have angles gears but the brass rings ate all the same profile. I don't know why they removed teeth on some but I've seen that before. The small bits are synchro keys and springs. Look at the teeth on the steel sleeve. If they are rounded at all you should replace the Hub and sleeve. Some of the OEM Parts come as a kit Hub sleeve and Synchro however it looks like you wouldn't need that because you already have synchros

Man I was sweating that one....thank you. I am aware of looking for rounding and wear from my motorcycle days.....all looks good. I got to run a 390 big block to the machine shop tomorrow then I will finish this last shaft and get ready to measure preload. Question....do I have to put the fork assembly and all back in to measure or can I do it with those pieces out???

Got my Quaife LSD in last Monday, sure does look sweet. The only thing that did not look sweet was the price tag. Hurts every time I look at it. I thought I hit the jackpot when I found a company that advertised it for $869 and $70 for shipping. Got an email that said the price had been listed incorrectly but they would still give it to me for $1050 with shipping included. As far as I could tell that was about the going rate and I would save on the shipping so I ordered it. I noted that it did not have the speedo gear so I think I have located one for about $40. I will order it when I order my shims. I also think I read in an older thread that one of the stock bearings would not fit the quaife and that I would have to order a special bearing. I have not checked it yet but if this is true, does anyone know the bearing size so that I can get that ordered? I can not measure preload without it.

I can't speak from first-hand experience but on a 1g there are two different size axles for front wheel drive so that may be where this came from. On a 2GB should be good. Again I am not speaking from actual experience but what I know about axle changes between the years. Measure your stocker.

Cool....Pauleyman, I would like to take a minute and say thank you for your guidance threw this rebuild. You have certainly been a tranny mentor. I have learned in forums that is you ask humbly for help there is usually a person or two that is willing to guide you. I restored and hot rodded out a 1976 vette in which I needed a paint job. The shops quoted me a price of 10k+ so I decided to do it myself. I had never painted a car before and hooked up with a fella in Ohio that walked me threw every step of the way. I chose a candy wild cherry color. The pic below is how it turned out and I was very pleased. It also attracts quite a crowd wherever I take it. Total cost of paint job was 3k.
