I have a 95 gst and my tranny is acting up. When I go to back up, I can only go a few feet at a time and then it just free revs like it didn't go in gear. And then going down the road, I try to go from first to second and it's like no gear is there. I put it where second should be and it just whines and free revs. Could this just be a clutch adjustment or did the kid before me rip out the gears?

Id check the cables running to the tranny. Also make sure the cotter pins where the cables attach to the transmission are still installed. If not check under the shift boot for loose or damaged hardware.

I had my dad watch the cables when I shifted into reverse and he said it went in. He's a mechanic so I'd say it probably did go in. But the car also wasn't running I just put it in gear.

See if the car stalls when the car is running and you put it in first gear and let out the clutch.

motor has been replaced and Trans has been rebuilt less than 500 miles but takes off in 2nd gear

also my trip meter doest work and speedo doest work???
everything else works tho.

what can i do????WTF:(

These may be stupid questions but did you check the fuses and is the speed sensor connected on the back of the transmission?

this part was unplugged on my car when i got it. there is a speed censer on the trans just under the TB make sure its plugged in. if it is might want to look into replacing it. it has a plastic gear that runs it and goes bad.

sounds like cables to me. if it were a clutch it wouldn't go in one gear and not the others. You can't really "strip" the gears in a MT. If you were to break off teeth in one gear or another you would have alot of noise from the teeth rattling around in the case or it would just lock up.
The other possibility is a broken and or bent shift rod that's not pushing one cog into the next far enough to "engage" the gear. If you youtube an animation of how MT's work you'll understand what im saying. Is it grinding at all when you try to put it in a gear or does it take alot of force? if it does than your cluch slave cylinder needs fluid and or bleeding. (shared with brakes in our cars)
here is the process break down
clutch in= clutch release fork pushes on pressure plate allowing the friction disk to slip freely from the flywheel,
move shifter into gear= shifter cable pushes or pulls shifter fork
shifter fork pulls or pushes desired cog into position so that it connects with the input shaft
clutch out = tension off of clutch fork, pressure plate mashes friction disk and flywheel, thus connecting the input shaft to the crankshaft (trans and crank are now spinning together)
trans output shaft spins tires. car goes.

hope that helps

I tested my synchros and the only good ones are 4th and 5th. Every other gear will grind when you out a little pressure into the gear box while the cars idling and the clutch isn't pushed in.
