I have two pictures attached..

I started getting a weird belt like tapping noise one day, and you can only hear it from drivers side, and wear the belts are.. its not a rod knocking or anything, but i can't seem to come up with the answers of what it is..

But anyway's its really bothering me. So i pulled the upper timing belt cover, and saw these weird markings on timing belt..

Are these normal?? No frays on edges or anything..

OK, I am talking about the thinkness of the belt not how wide it is, I am looking at the OP pics and the belt looks to be about as half as thin (wore down from top to bottom) as it should be. So much so that it's starting to show the teeth depressions on the outside (top), that's where you're getting that very defined striped look.

So, to the OP, can we get a pic of the belt looking strait at it from the side? That would help, it could just be the angle playing tricks on me:coy:

So that brings me to the sounds, which I think is a failing (not failed yet otherwise you would have smoke) pully dragging on the belt. This would be the idler or tension pully.

i really don't think the belt is thinner from top to bottom.. looks about the same to me..

Can i take alternator and power steering and everything off, the timing belt covers, and turn the car over?? And run off the battery alone for a minute to hear things closer?? Sorry for the newb question..

Heres to more pics

Yeah, take it all apart and start it.

The belt doesn't look thin from top to bottom. It looks normal.

Could it be your balancer separating, I don't know what they sound like when they do, but it's a possibility I suppose.

Yeah I listened, but it's hard for me to tell shit with out being there. I don't like trying to come up with an amazing explanation based on a video. But, I'm leaning towards what others are saying, but still trying to throw out other options for you.

Have you tried to reach down under the cam gears and feel how lose the belt is? Or have you checked the tension on it all just by twisting it?

I'm at work till 9 but I bought myself some MDG and I'm pull alt and power steering and start and see if it was ether those belts or crank pulley.. If not ima pull timing belt, tensioner, and bearings off and clean up the little oil around it.. Then install new oem parts.. You don't think that noise is a rod bearing do ya? That's what I'm scared of.

But the noise doesn't increase with rpm. It's only really at idle.. I feel like since the noise is only at idle, the timing belt is loose and hits tensioner but when Rpms go up the belt is tighter and you can't hear it.. Noise is only at 900 and below rpms

I work at dodge and had one of the techs listen and before they saw the belt pictures he said it sounds like a timing belt slap. Like the tensioner is hitting off the belt.
Never let a Dodge tech touch your Mitsubishi. :D

Tomorrow, show him this photo and ask exactly where the belt and tensioner could meet firmly enough to make such a noise.

If there was any type tensioner issue, the belt would likely be loose as shit. I'm with some of the others here saying it may be something unrelated to the timing system entirely, like a bad crank pulley or possibly a loose water pump pulley, etc.

Dodge tech touch your Mitsubishi
Ain't that the truth!

Does the "Baby Chargers" - the Avengers, have a Mitsu or Hyundai built 2.4l in them?

(Motor looks like the 2.4 that's in our KIA Rondo and KIA uses a lot of Mitsu stuff for their vehicles. Hyundai took the 4G series and ran with it )

But, got one better: went to our local Mitsu dealership back when I got my Laser to get my belt kit that I ordered and was enquiring on how to break the center bolt off the crank sprocket by asking a tech on the best way.

I told them I had a '90 Laser RS Turbo with the 2.0L turbo ( guess, they didn't know what a 4G63 is, yet parts department knows all about them, esp when I told them I had a 6bolt Galant VR4 motor..they about passed out..) and then asked the question. They gave me instruction on how to pull the pulley off the way you do a 420A with the claw puller.

I hurried up and left after nodding my head.

Go get a rollerskate and place the wheel against the timing belt between the camgears and push down while the engine is running. If the noise goes away its the tensioner.

I have the same marks on my blue gates timing belt that has maybe 1 hr of run time. I think mine has just collected dirt and grease.
