Call me crazy... but I cant seem to find a how to on the gm maf. basically all I want to know is everything needed to run it. I'm rebuilding my head at the moment after a blown head gasket and 14 bent valves killed my car. so an aftermarket metal headgasket, titanium valves, Big MHI 16g turbo, and 565 injectors later... I want to do the Maf. I tried the search so please dont flame me if there's one out there that I missed. Here is what I think my parts list entales... Intake, GM Maf, Maf Translator... anything I'm missing?

It's under a MAFT setup.

Basically you need a GM Maf, a Maf adapter, and a MAFT which is a MAF Translator. I don't personally know what else is needed, but hopefully this will point you in the right direction.

Just so you know, this is a TERRIBLE way to tune your car. If you are just using it to vent, you would be better off with ECMLink v3 and the MAF or go with speed density.

+1.

Listen to Liquid. He knows more about that stuff than I do. Though, I know people have been able to decently dial things in using a combination of a SAFC and a MAFT. I use TunerPro+Ostrich with supporting mods.

Liquid.. you're running Speed Density, aren't you?

Yes, I'm using SD on Link v3. Also the other downside with the MAFT is the tune will change with the weather. You can get an alright tune with the combination of a SAFC and MAFT but ts still not the best way to do it. Smaller the injectors the better off you would be with that setup. I believe the max injector size with the SAFC is 750cc.

Ok... Thank you for the suggestion. I am mostly looking for a less restrictive air intake. The swoosh sound means nothing to me. So what all would be needed to run that setup?

You do realize the stock MAF can support 500hp. Just get a less restrictive intake pipe but keep the diameter the same as the turbo inlet.

If that's the case then I would recommend you to get ECMLink v3 and run speed density. Not only will you have a MUCH MUCH better tuning setup, you will have a logger, timing adjust, helpful community, and it's only 2 sensors compared to another MAS that you would place further upstream in the pipe.

However, it's your call on what you ultimately want to do as it's your car. We are merely giving advice and suggestions.

You know, since day 1 of reading threads dealing with the SAFC, I have always seen 750cc to be the max. I was always aware that lower the size the better though. Guess that's what I'll be informing people now then.

Edit:
I have read of people using the 750cc injectors and that must have been what stuck with me. As that was the largest size I've read it with. I did take notice that there is already a decent amount of timing pull with the 660s and it's very bad on the 750s.

So I guess it's safe to say 660 or less but should really only be used for the 500 range.

Your also forgetting the general... couplers... I thought the max safc injector was 650. What do I know I don't have one LOL.
Will you can use maft and safc combo as a beginner/ how to feel tune. But if you already have a general idea I say jump right up to dsmlink...

;3 The winning factor of DSMLink = The support. I'm not sure there's another tuning related software for our vehicles that have so many people dedicated to it. If you go that route you can rest assured that any questions you have about it will be answered in a timely manner. Though I don't use it...I'd have to recommend it if money isn't an issue for you.

well it's not like i have an abundance of it... but i dont mind paying more for a better product/setup... thank you... ill look in to the ecmlink

You can still use the GM MAF with DSMlink, you just need a different MAF cable that they sell.

As for mounting the sensors, the MAP goes in the intake manifold. On a 2g car you can buy a NPT adapter from RRE and literally bolt the NPT hole into the factory MDP sensor location and just screw a 3.5bar or 5bar type sensor right in...

The IAT sensor needs to be installed as close to the MAP sensor as you can, but in a location that doesn't get heat-soaked. For most, that means you need a 3/8" NPT bung welded onto your throttle body elbow or UICP as close to the throttle body as you can get.

When you buy ECMlink or ECMlink lite, you get a user account in the ECMtuning forums which is a golden ticket to every tuning related question about setup and use of that product. You don't get the login without the purchase, but you won't be left in the dark.

Has anyone switched from a blowthru setup to SD and have any input on the difference in power production and drivability?

I switched to SD using ECMlink. I didn't notice a huge increase in power, partially because the GM MAF was tuned well. I can't really speak to the driveability as I had some issues that were unrelated.

So I would say as long as things are tuned well to begin with, and you do the switch properly, you won't notice much of a difference. Some people claim to have a bit quicker throttle response on SD, but each car is different.
