Alright, I'm finishing up my build and I need to tie up a few loose ends. One of which is my Timing Tensioner. I have 2 between the two motors im working with, both with around 150K miles. Is it absolutely necessary I replace it? I mean if I install it and it is within the spec in my manual does that mean its good for long term? or just that its good for now.

If yours was this old and in spec, would you reuse it?

ps my last build from 05 ran with a +100k mile tensioner but i didnt want to start any bad habits with this car.

I never trust them. I always replace the tensioner when I replace the timing belt. It may be ok but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Replacing it is cheap insurance.

It's an inexpensive part that will completely destroy your build if it fails.

My buddy decided not to change his on his evo and when he took it to buschur to get tuned, the second pull the old tensioner gave out. Needless to say he then got a stage 3 motor and is running in the 9's. But its always better to be safe then sorry. Always Replace +1

We know that most last 100k miles since this is the (new) factory interval for timing belt replacement. After that the failure rate goes up.

When they fail it's far more expensive than replacing the part in the first place.

A used part may meet spec today but the question is for how much longer, will it last another 100k or 60k?, and what's the cost of it failing.

The safe and smart decision is to replace it, the belts, and the pulleys every time. If your stressing over the cost now think about how devastated you'll be when faced with redoing the job plus a new head.
