Bought a 96 GST with a broken timing belt. Got it to my house. I know it has to be times before I can check the valves. On the timing gears there are a lot of white marks and a lot of notches. I don't know exactly which ones to go by and possibly if there was an easier way to get TDC and get it done. Please direct me in the right direction I did do some searching for my problem but did not find anything. Any am all help will be appreciated thanks guys.

Before you worry about setting a timing belt on the engine.

1) Pull the VC, look for misplaced rocker arms

2) Pull the spark plugs

3) remove the cam caps and cams

4) perform a leak down test.

This will let you know if you have any bent valves in short order.

You shouldn't have to pull the cams? If you pull the valve cover and line up the lobes against the piston location (pull the plugs and use a rod or gauge down the #1 spark plug hole to measure) you should be able to get the motor timed. Don't forget about the balance shafts, if you still have those too.

I'd definitely do a compression and leakdown test once buttoned up, to try and get an idea of the overall motor health though.
