Possible timing problem?

Alright so I searched and found nothing like this.
I picked up a 1G talon tsi last week, totally new to the dsm world.
It ran great for the first few days, loads of power, boosted properly and all seemed well. With 72k on the motor I figured better safe then sorry so I went and put on a new timing belt, water pump, tensioner & idler pulleys, balance shaft belt.
After I got everything together and timed, the car idles and runs great until about 4k and then really starts vibrating and does not want to be revved past that point, almost like i am maxing out every gear.

After trying to trouble shoot this all day I'm beyond flabbergasted with the whole situation. Is it possible that I miss timed it?

yes, that is more than likely the problem. Not the timing because it'd run like shit all the time. But my guess is the balance shaft. You have to make sure when not only your cam gears line up, but the pully on the oil pump has an arrow that needs lined up. It's possible however to line it up and the balance shaft still be out. you have to use a screwdriver in the block to check this. Just watch this will explain what i mean. YouTube - 6-Bolt Mitsubishi Timing Belt Replacement its right near the end of the video.

may i suggest tho, while you have it all apart again get a balance shaft eliminator kit to give you a little extra power. BALANCE SHAFT ELIMINATOR KIT ECLIPSE TALON TURBO 4G63 : eBay Motors (item 260671181527 end time Oct-29-10 19:23:09 PDT)

Thanks for the quick response! I'm going to have to check that out, is that still the same procedure for a 7 bolt? One plus though is I know my way around in there pretty well now after having it off 3 times now. haha

(I don't think he wants to worry about BS removal since that will induce vibration - which he doesn't want to have at the moment..)

Prob the oil pump sprocket and/or front BS sprocket didn't get timed correctly.

The oil pump BS rolls twice as fast as the oil pump sprocket. Thus it's easy to go 180* out of phase and that will cause vibration.

There's an easier way - take the T-belt off and have the oil pump sprocket mark at the 12:00 position. Let it go and if it rolls counter-clockwise, it's in time (phase) with the motor's timing.

But if it rolls clockwise, the balancer is 180* out of phase and you need to give it one complete turn and the sprocket should roll counter-clockwise when you let it go.

If you're all good, then re-align all of your marks to sprockets when you redo the belt.

Good luck-DSM

I'll have to give that a try first, thanks for the advise.
And like you said, I'm not all about tearing the whole thing apart, this is my current daily driver, so only minor mods are being done.

It could be something simple like a boost leak from a loose coupler or clamp that wasn't tightened properly after the timing job. I would do a quick boost leak test just to rule that out before tearing into the motor again.

Hope this helps!

I had a N/T 4g63 that I had one tooth out and it ran fine at idle but would not go past something like 4K RPM...I'm not sure what tooth was off. I believe my crank was one tooth off from my cams.

Its holding boost fine, it will boost fine till appox. 10psi at 4k when it starts vibrating, then I don't try to push it past that point.
But its will be thursday before I have time off work to dig into her again, so I'll keep you updated.
