Timing on HKS 272 Cams and HKS Adjustable Cam Gears

Hey Guys, I have searched and searched about how to setup the timing on my Engine but I was unable to locate the correct setting. I recently purchased a fully built 6 bolt and installed it in my 99 GSX.

The engine came with HKS 272 Cam Gears and also HKS Adjustable Cam Gears but when I line up the dowels (of the cams that stick thru the cam gears) at 12:00 as you would with the stock cams/cam gear's the lines on the gears that are suppose to be at 3:00 and 9:00 don't line up unless you rotate the cam gears a couple tooth and then when you do that of course the dowels will no longer be at 12:00. I'm sure the reason why this happens in because of the different lobes of the cams. But because of this diffrence from stock cam setup its hard to set the timing correctly with out risking crushing my new valves.

So my question is should I advance or retard the exhaust and/or intake cam gears to get the dowels to point at 12:00 while still having the 3:00 on the exhaust cam and 9:00 on intake came or remove the HKS setup, sell them and install the stock cam system because this is frustrating me . Right now the car runs but sputters alot especially with the CAS set at 5 degrees advance based on RRE instructions on CAS install RRE 1Gcasin2G

Car Runs but but horrible because of the timing issue wither its mechanical or ignition timing. Please help guys and ready to yank out these cams and gears for stock setup. Thanks in advance

What I would do is try to find some stock cam gears for now and toss those on and then when you go get a dyno toss the adjustable ones back on.

After a few days of not getting a response from anyone Yesterday I removed the cams from my spare 7 bolt head and installed them. Car runs better but does not sound as good as those 272's Thanks

I have pics but they aren't very clear and also they were from before I reset the cam's back to Zero. The gears were used and removed from an EVO which is the same gears for the DSM based on HKS's part numbers but I didn't want to use the gear setting because I'm sure they were from a car that was already tuned to those settings so I zero them out.

You can put your 272s on the stock gears and be ok bud.

I thought about doing that and I guess I'll do that once I get the engine broken in with the stock cams/gears.

If you want to run the HKS adjustable cam gears you should read into degreeing your chamshafts. Pain in the butt from what I have read and I think on the 2g's you have to do it with the motor pulled. Maybe somebody else can chime in on that.

I always degree'd my SBC's in but need to learn anything different for these DOHC engines. My dial indicator mount does't work well since it has a magnetic base, but here is some good reading for me and everyone that would like to make sure everything is exactly in time

Jafromobile did a great video on degreeing a 4g63 camshaft. Its on youtube. Just search jafromobile. That guy is a bad dude.

The problem is the adjustment on the exhaust cam being almost to the full end of the range, combined with the intake gear not being zero'd out either. You also need to get another bolt for the intake gear.

can throw 272 back in and keep adj cam gears, replace missing screw add loctite. and set at 0 for now.

yes, degree cams with engine out.

should run fine if not better.
