OK, just did the HG. Went to put the new timing belt on and had everything, twice now, in the correct markings. I go to crank the motor over by hand and after 2 full rotations, I'm off 180 degrees. Any suggestions?

Wait. Doesn't the motor have to full rotation twice for everything to be lined up again at TDC?

Thanks. Get this...If I have this right and everything lines up correctly, I have some awesome news about timing this motor :)

I will once I know for sure in a bit. If it works out right, anyone that can turn a wrench ought to be able to master this with ease.

Ok, it works. Haven't tried to start the vehicle yet but everything is lined up to all timing marks and cam gear marks. this is just on my car so I don't know about everyones motor. NO special tool required. Compress auto tensioner, hold in place with pin, small nails, tiny allen wrench or whatever you like. Put tensioner back into place installing both bolts. Run timing belt like it says to in the VFAQ and then release the pin that was holding tensioner in place. Might be off a tooth the first time you try but you'll figure it out :)

instead of using the pin to hold the tensioner compressed, why not just use the tensioner compressor tool that was made to do that?

Because why on earth would you pay money for a "tool" that you don't even need? Kinda ridiculous that it's even an option. And you go for the tool, but wait, you have to order and wait for it. No, sir

Forgive me, but where's the part that deals with the tensioner pulley? Or is that assumed to be in the VFAQ portion?

Ya, doing the tensioner thingey is a two-stage process...as it shows in the VFAQ.

Do Pulley first. Loosen pulley and roll pulley clockwise, which presses against the belt until the grenade pin just begins to loosen up, then tighten up the lockdown bolt.

Then let sit for a half hour.

Then, roll the motor over the 6 times to see of the pin remains slightly loose, but not removed. And marks should be dead on after the 6th roll.

If the pin tightens up or falls out, gotta do it all over again.

This sets up the .157 to .175 clearance between tensioner arm and measuring edge for proper tensioner action on the belt.....which is why you were off-mark when you rolled the motor.

Ummmm, didn't touch the the pulley. When the auto tnesioner was out the pulley dropped far enough. started the car up today. First start, fired right up. In time. Everything sounds great as well. Do I need to keeping going on about how simple this is?

DSM1G90... I was off because I didn't realize at first that I had to spin 6 full rotations. But after I did, still lined up everywhere. That was some good info to know though, thanks.
