im just trying to figure out why my car isnt getting spark and just wanted to round it down to a few things. how can i tell if the timing is 180 off and what other things could be causing it not to start? coil? ignitor? fuel pump?

TIA,
Bryan

Pull the timing belt cover and see if you can check the marks by rotating the crank clockwise only with a ratchet on the crank pulley and see if they line up and where they are. If you are off by 180 get ready for valve problems.

well the thing is, ive never been able to start the car ever since i put the motor in my car. im thinking either the timing is off by 180, or the coil or resistor is bad.

Oooooh okay. so you arent gonna have valve issues. Does it even turn over? And if it is 180 out, you will be able to tell, Im sure you lines all the timing marks up when you put on the belt right? If you did you shouldnt have any problems I mean its like this

If you have a chiltons manual, chapter 2 has how to test the distributor and transistor pack. if you dont let me know and Ill type it for you.

yea ive never taken it all apart to check. i pulled this motor out of another car and it was running fine so im thinkin its something i did such as the timing being off. is there a way to check to see if the timing is right on the CPS? Either that or i guess it could be the coil or resistor but i doubt it.

Okay dude. All you have to do is pull the upper timing belt cover off, and stick a ratchet on the crank pulley, turn the crank over with the ratchet clock wise only and wait till the timing marks meet (or dont). They will meet inbetween them botk, and will point right at each other.

But did you even mees with the timing belt? If you didn't and the motor was running before, you wont be 180 out.

I know this is probably a dumb question, but you hooked EVERYTHING back up right? Nothing is wired wrong? Are all your fuses good? I mean, what all have you actually checked since this problem was realized? That will help to narrow it down a bit.

Lemme know.

no im not thinking its off because of that, im thinking its off because i took the CPS off another motor and just stuck it on. i dont remember which way i turned it when i put it on. thats why i think its off. would that cause it not to start, being in the wrong position?

thanks

have you looked at the ecu? if so are the caps leaking? if that is good check the mpi fuse on the battery terminal. personally it sounds to me like the ecu is dead and thats your problem. thats just my .02

p.s. my car did the same thing when i first got it and it turns out it was the computer

You have to align the offset tab on the magnet with the same offset holes on the camshaft when you install it......

Thats all that is required when you put it in other that torques. Did you do that? If not, pull it off, line it up, and tryagain. If not, let me know.

yea i took it off and still nothing. the only other ECU i have is the GST one . will that work? this motor is out of a GST, but the car is a talon. sorry for so many dumb ?'s, im just still tryin to get used to all of this. i guess im also gonna go thru and check all the fuses again to make sure none of them are blown.

TIA,
Bryan

well i replaced the talon ecu with the GST and still nothing. im so lost right now i dont know what to do. i guess ill just have to take it to the dealer and have them figure it out. :(

that i will do.$100 just to look at it and im guessing another $200-$300 in repairs. welcome to the dsm world i guess eh? :toobad:
