Ok I search and you wouldn't believe how many threads there are on balance shaft elimination but not many on this issue. After narrowing and narrowing my seach I found 2 thread saying that it can cause vibrations. I have this problem but, can it cause any other problems besides the vibration?

When mine was out 180deg, the vibration was so pronounced (low droning btw 2500-4500RPM) that it would have been difficult not to diagnose that as the problem. The mechanic at the time also managed not to properly align the camshafts (exh cam has tendency to turn one tooth during belt install), so because of that my vacuum at idle was also low.

The rear BS being out of phase should not have any impact to performance as it's doing nothing more than cancelling the natural imbalance of the 4cyl engine :dsm:

I definitley has the vibration, but if it causes no performance problem I will keep searching. Thanks.

When my rear balance shaft was 180 off, it vibrated the engine so bad it broke the head off the 9mm bolt in the rear that holds the tranny on, then when I pushed the clutch in it broke the ear off the front of the engine that the tranny bolt threads into (right by the slave cylinder where all the pressure was), which in turn cracked the bell housing since there were only the top two bolts holding it on.
Can you just put a screwdriver in the rear of the block to check it like on a 6bolt?

No don't get me wrong I'm going to get the balance shaft back in time soon, I was just asking mainly if it cause any performance issues.

If the rear balance shaft were out of phase, the engine would vibrate horribly, and therefore be a performance Hinderence, thereby affecting "performance". When you are setting the oil pump BS, its supposed to fall to the "Right" when the arrow points up.

Good luck.

Are you sure this is correct? I read about this before I did my recent timing belt and pully change, and im almost positive its supposed to fall to the "left", or in otherwords a counterclock-wise direction. I believe it states this in the vfaq timing belt change article to that I went by, and my balance shafts seem to be correctly in phase. I have no vibration problems. Ill see if I can find it in that vfaq article.

Ok found it,

Its about half way down, in red, under direction #24

NOTE that there is an easier way to do this. Simply rotate the mark on the oil pump sprocket until it is pointing straight up, and let it go. If the sprocket rotates towards (counterclockwise) the timing mark on the engine, the oil pump sprocket is aligned correctly. If it rotates away (clockwise) from the mark, spin the sprocket a full turn and test again, and it should properly rotate towards the mark now. Now line the mark on the sprocket back up with the mark on the engine. This avoids having to remove the rear access bolt entirely.

I lived with mine for over a year. The buzzing was annoying but nothing more.

just take off the belt for the front shaft and for the rear use a screw driver in the hole on the back of the block that the bolt is in to align it, and hey maybe you will get a few hp out of the removal of the front bs belt. hen did my timign belt and water pump i didnt even bother putting a new belt on just slipped out the old one and left it at that.
