on my 6 bolt i just put on a new head and now after the timing belt install i rotated the engine once by hand it turned over fine but now when i line up the timing mark on the top cams the on on the crank is slightly below the timing mark, but if i were a tooth off it would be above the crank mark by more than it is below it now, if that makes any sense, LOL anybody have any ideas?? like i said it turns over fine by hand and i started it and it was idling good couldnt give it any gas though the maf is unhooked?

Every 6 turns it will line up on the cam gears and the crank pulley... With the MAF unhooked the ECU is blind to the amount of air coming in so it goes into safe mode, which is an extremely rich AFR.

i know but it doesnt line up 100% and its freaking me out its close though just wonderin if anyone else had this problem

but it runs pretty good so i was figuring its right wish i could take pictures but i dont have a camera

This is what my timing looked like when my belt slipped 2 teeth, can you maybe edit the picture of the crank pulley where yours is at in relation to TDC?

i dont know i took it apart and went one tooth the other way with the crank and it was like 1/4 inch above the groove, so i put it back the way i had it and its just barely under the mark (im talkin about the mark on the front case not the mark on the front timing cover)

ok on my gst... they dont line up at all its slightly off so if i try to move it one tooth further or one tooth back... it will just make it worst... so mines as close as possible... even with proper tension

10-4 thats what i wanted to hear LOL yeah thats what i did i moved it one tooth the other way and it was way off (didnt crank the motor with it like that) but the way i have it now it runs great so im guessing its good to go

Don't "guess" with your timing belt. It's either right, or it's not. :)

Did you let the tensioner rest for a bit after turning the motor over several times? (And I assume you used new timing components...right? ;)) Once the belt is under tension, it takes some time for the tensioner to relax into position. You also need to make sure that you put the proper torque on the tensioner pulley.

I always set the tensioner with a .150 drill bit, spin the motor over 8-9 times, and then let it sit for a half hour or so just for the hell of it. Then I go back and get the marks lined up, verify TDC, check the tensioner clearance again and then spin it another 6 times once or twice just to double and triple check it.

With new components and a properly done timing job, the marks should line up very closely. If they don't, something isn't quite right. You may get by with it, or you may not. Considering these are interference motors, it doesn't hurt to be a bit anal on the t-belt.

I thought mine was ok like that also, until one day the belt slipped. Timed mine with the exhaust geaqtr one tooth off, yep it ran great for a while ran great. Also never changed pulleys unitl it was too late. they were bad and the timing slipped last year. Not sure what happened next, now its dead on.

well the car is all back together now runs and drives just like before has lifter tick like crazy though hope it dont end up being a problem (if so i have a 12 month warranty on the head)

if it idles and drives like normal then you should be good... as much as i wanted to line up my marks they just wouldnt...!!!

same here i had another person tell me to ignore the timing dashes and just put the dowl pin straight up
