i have always had a light ticking problem somewhere under my valve cover.just today when i was driving to school i notice my oil preasure was very low but other than that everything was normal.when i got out of school i droped my friend off and went to autozone to get some motor oil.on the way their i noticed a loud ticking/tapping sound from under my hood. i also noticed that as the rpms increased the ticking became faster and louder. got to autozone and bought a quart of 5w-30 motor oil and poured it into my engine.my oil presure is back to normal but i still have that ticking/tapping.can anyone help?

The 4g63 is notorious for that tick. Having a 420a I've never really looked into too much but I know that there are a few threads out there that have different remedys for this. Try searching, your bound to come up with somthing on this.

Your ticking and tapping needs to be isolated. If it's coming from the top of the motor, it could be a collapsed lifter. If it's coming from the bottom end, it's very likely a trashed rod bearing. There are a couple of ways you can find out.

1. Have a friend rev the motor to the point at which it makes noise and pull the sparkplug at the cylinder that seems to be the loudest. You may have to try each one. If the noise stops when you remove any one plug, it's a rod bearing which can be confirmed by dropping the downpipe and oil pan. Glitter or brass shavings in the pan will tell the tale.

2. Pull the valve cover (motor off please) and press on the rocker arms with your thumb. If finger pressure can push a lifter down, the lifter's collapsed and needs to be replaced.

Since you lost oil pressure, I vote for the rod bearing, but I hope that's not the case since you'll need a rebuild. Until you diagnose this, I would not drive the car anymore. If you do continue to drive it and it's a spun bearing you put a rod through the block and your farly inexpensive rebuild will turn into a more expensive shortblock purchase.

Good luck and PM me if you have questions.
