thoughts on these compression and leak down numbers. 1G talon tsi awd.

okay so I recently bought a 1G eagle talon TSI = AWD turbo for a mere $300. body isn't that great and the engine isn't that great. but It is a very promising car.

Ive always mess with RWD cars so this will be my first AWD cars and after a quick test drive i love it. No supra or my Datsun 260z with a turbo V8 can launch like this :hellyeah: it just chirps and go... but slow(for now since its stock). so before i start modding I want to get it to standard running condition.

anyways

plan for this car is simple. 300whp and will be my winter daily driven since i commute in my moto(rc51) and datsun(which has drag radials) so i need a switch during raining season plus I can use this for snowboarding trips instead of my jeep and save gas LOL.

so heres my problem
smokes ON IDLE. bluish and white looking smoke.

compresion numbers are: regular / then I added a cap full of oil to see if its the rings.

1 = 100 psi / 110 psi
2 = 90 psi / 105 psi
3 = 90 psi / 100 psi
4 = 125 psi / 140 psi

^ will this ring survive any longer or do they really NEED to be changed? i dont want to change them if they can last a bit longer since i have never done rings before. I would rather save up for another stock motor to swap in than touch the rings LOL.

Leak down test
all cyl are 50-55%

1 and 4 cyl leaks through intake valve

and all leaks through the rings. but not to much.
no air bubble or increase in water. DOES NOT OVERHEAT.


major questions.
1. is the smoke on idle due to piston rings or valve stem seals or turbo seals? i dont see that much smoke when i drive it BUT as a driver you can really see minor smoke.

2. BHG is definitely a possibility specially since it idles rough as well as whitish smoke on idle. what do you guys think?



do you guys think the turbo(seals) is also blown?

what about the rings? the numbers dont quite add up to me. it seems like a HG is the problem more than anything. (asuming the blue smoke is from turbo)

and if its the rings wouldnt adding the oil in cyl increase the compression test dramatically? not just a mere 10-15psi?

Also since two cyl is leaking through the intake valves i was thinking replacing the whole head with a stock one when or if i do the head gasket. what do you guys think? or should i just try to fix it?

The compression is ideally should be 165, the service rebuild limit is 131.
The oil on idle is probably a combination of leaking past the rings due to low RPMs, and leaking stem seals.

I'm sitting with an engine right now that was 121, 120, 35, 105. Cylinder 2 is scored, gouged, and the piston is melted, as well as a crack in the cylinder head, intake port to oil galley. I'm rebuilding the entire thing, with a new block, and a new head.

yes i understand that. i guess i was kinda wondering if a leaky HG could cause such a low number?

and smoke is still there even if i rev it to 3k and hold it there. so you dont think its the turbo seals?
 
It could, hard to say without pulling it apart. Mine smoked any time it sat at idle for a minute or longer. That is until cylinder 2 had it's meltdown ... then the idle went to hell, and it started pouring out white/blue smoke constantly. If you look in my profile there are pics of what I discovered today.

As for the Turbo, I'd lean towards a no on the seals. I'm guessing you'll find plenty of oil throughout your entire inter-cooler and intake system, but it's coming in through the cylinders.

i guess ill check that out when i get a chance to pull the turbo sides out.
im hoping for a clean/dry intercooler and a dry exhaust LOL. one less thing to fix. the IC/intake side should be dry if its not leaking oil correct?
 
With mine there is oil throughout the entire system, but it's from oil coming in past the rings, and through a crack in the head. Not looking forward to cleaning it all ... I might just say the hell with it and put on a FMIC sooner then originally planned.
 
If you are running the stock intake system and don't have a catch can off the valve cover, then there is a good possibility that you will see oil in the intercooler piping and in the intercooler itself. If you find oil in the lines it could be from the line that goes from the side of the valve cover to the intake pipe which is known for leaking oil into the turbo inlet and it throws it into the intake system, coating everything as it goes.
 
If your valves are leaking you will see the blueish smoke from the oil burning. Start the car with the radiator cap off and see if any bubbling occurs. If so, most likely headgasket problem. Sounds like just the turbo though.
 
If its not the HG, then the next step, before the rings would be valve seals. and once you have rulled out the valve seals, have your turbo checked, even though i dont really think that would be the problem, and the last step and most time consuming would be rings.
