This is my first 2g eclipse... I found it sitting in some ones yard with 207k miles.. knocked on the door asked if they would sell it... After a few minutes of talking I paid the person $400 and towed it home.

Its a 1997 Eclipse Gs 5 speed. Any way got it home put a charge on the batt replaced all fluids and tried cranking nothing. Did some testing had no power to the coil so I replaced the COIL and ASD relay and the car fired up.. Now my question is before I start sinking more money into it I decided to make sure the motor was healthy enough otherwise id rather spend money on a new motor.

So I did a compression check and I had 185 on each cylinder. My question is that decent enough on a 420A I do alot of driving and if I am going to invest into this motor Id like to know if its healthy enough to get some more miles out of it. If those numbers aren't good then maybe ill look for another 420A or rebuild the current one.

Not to bad of numbers. I would just do maintenance (timing belt and all timing components) since it has 200k on it. Did the previous owner do anything to the car?

I didn't get much info other then they bought it for there son a couple of years ago and then it broke down and they parked it and never touched again. I like the eclipse though and going on a mini road trip at the end of summer and was hoping I could get it in top tip shape and hopefully with those numbers I can get some good miles out of it.

Yea ill do the timing belt this weekend.

So its decided then? 185 across all 4 is a decent enough as far as compression is concerned to get some good miles out of the car... as long as every thing else is in working order?

Yes. 185 across the board is like you said...decent. Average. Keep up the routine maintenance and you'll be fine.

as long as you do the maitanence it will take care of you. i have a 420a in my talon and ive done all the maitenance to it when its suppost to be done and changing the oil every 3k miles. i still have the original block and head and running the original rings from when the car was built in 1998. have 150 psi compression in the cylinders and ive pushed it to the limit many times and its still kicking at 220k miles.
