And I still say that you would have been faster with a 5sp!

Automatics eat up some power, but do give you some advantages. Unfortunately, 14b does not give any power to spare! ;)

Under ideal condition, yeah, I agree that the stick trans would certainly pick up 2-3mph and possibly even a little ET.

BUT, Iv been doing this a long long time, and ideal conditions rarely happen, ESPECIALLY when you build a "race car" out of junkyard parts like I do. Prior to the auto swap, I went through three different awd 1g stick transmissions trying to find one that would bang gears. :roll eyes:

Trans 1 and 2 were junk that would grind the 1-2 and lockout at least one gear each pass. Trans 3 worked ok, but wasn't anything remotely fast shifting. The used ACT 2600 broke right after trans 3 went in. That's not even counting the broke rear axle and the "twisted together" driveshaft/yoke failure. Old worn out stick driveline parts are worthless IMHO, especially when you don't get to go to the drags anytime I want and a driveline failure on the first pass means I don't run again till next month IF IF IF I find the time to fix and repair.

When using "partout" driveline items that are 100k miles old...the auto JUST WORKS. It shifts every gear fast. Nothing breaks. The car 60's consistently in the mid 1.4's. Back to back test w/ 130mph 16G setup: the Auto was 2 tenths quicker and lost 2 mph.

If I had money to piss away on a dog box or even a freshly rebuilt sycro trans, yeah, maybe the 5speed would be faster. But compare worn out junk parts pulled from scrap cars and you see why my choice is the slushy one.:thumb:

    Nate,

What you are talking about is plane, dumb luck! Dealing with "parted out" components, you never know what you are going to need! You can go through 10 trannies and not find a good one. Where as, your next ONE could be IT!

What is nice about racing 14b cars is that you do not need super duty tranny components (aside from fixing center diff). But you DO need something that shifts FAST and once you find it, it should last a while, because of relatively low torque and RPMs.

This "LUCK" also applies to the automatic trannies! There are bad shifting automatic transmission, as well ;). Bruce ran into a his share of those...

And just to be clear, Nate's 11.3 was very impressive! I just think it could have been 11.0-11.1 on a good shifting manual tranny!

Did you guys know the double syncro second gear is stock on the 93-99 DSM? If you disassemble enough trannies you should be able to piece together something nice.

Such a slow time of year! It also seems we've lost a good portion of the "group" to larger turbos and/or other interests.

I'll be starting to buy parts here shortly but most of them will be safety things like my 5 point harness, fire jacket, and driveshaft loop. I already picked up a scattershield and although I'm miffed about adding 8 lbs to the car it'll be worth it to pass tech and have the peace of mind. I have to replace the jmfab aluminum bumper I borrowed, might just fab something out of aluminum if I can find somebody to weld for me. Other purchases will include a staging brake setup and bushing kit for the front end components. I've kept myself for budgeting for any other parts knowing how much is going to get eaten up in doing all my chassis clean-up work.

I pulled the rear hatch that came with the white car off today. I want to see if I can clean up and re-use the lexan in my carbon fiber hatch. I need to counteract some of this safety weight!

Looks like your going down the right road. Upgrading only what needs to be done.

Im still rocking the 14B for a bit longer. Got some stuff I wanna try out and get a little into the non budget mods. I changed out for some lighter valve train stuff, Kiggly crank trigger setup, and a nice set of 1150cc injector.

Ive got a huge part that was offered to me from a member here. Cant quite let the cat out of the bag yet, but this should help in the power department if it all works out right.

Also think im going to try out an external wastegate setup this year and try to get my turbine pressure a little lower than they are. I should be out running March 2nd.

Very interested in finding out about the "power part". Not a lot of bolt-ons to add to what you've already got to make more power. :D

An external wastegate setup would be very nice!

Pulled the carbon fiber hatch and removed the glass today. Looks like the hatch w/lexan is going to come in at about 19.5 lbs. I honestly can't remember what the hatch weighed w/glass but either way it's a decent bit of weight loss.

I have been watching this thread since the beginning as we have been chasing a 14b record of our own. It supposedly stands 12.97 here in colorado. The best we have been able to muster to date was 13.7@99. We cameout last year 200lbs lighter with more tuning but it appears our turbo has issues. It has a good size boost leak past the shaft seal into the crankcase. So much it won't hold any air on a boost leak test. We verified it by bench testing just the turbo moving the exhaust wheel back and forth. Our time dropped to 14.0@94 last year. The driving improved, but we were down on power.

We are coming out 50lbs lighter this year and with as fresh a 14b as we can. We will finally have an alignment and good tires(slicks). I have my doubts to the validity of the record though as it was a full weight AFC car. This car of ours has all the fancy tricks and weighs 2590lbs without driver. If we can't do it with a good turbo, there was no way his pass can be taken as a serious, valid pass.

    So hi from the shadows.

I saw the car. And I still think its badass that you got another dsm. This mean you plan on more frequent visits here to the forums?

You guys have the worst air. I can see at that elevation someone running high 12s on a 14b with what your saying. Your 13.7 with a 99 mph trap can be bettered. I'll have to find my old time slips but with 99-100 I was able to get 13.4-13.5s. I ended with a 13.0@103 on that certain car. Get that thing to 60' and slam them gears.

Thanks Joe! Nice to see you chiming back in! And really cool to see you with another dsm.

Biglady, that makes me glad I don't live up there in the clouds. But, that is a beautiful area. I think I read a bit about this car on the Link forums?

I have shared some info over there. Racing at 5800ft with a DA regularly ranging from 8000-9000ft or more makes things tough. The rest of the country does not understand what it does to us.

The track I regularly run at is 4000' DA between 5500-7000. I know how bad it is. The track is NHRA sanctioned and when you go to make your licensing passes, you don't even need to go 9s on your full it passes.

Hey guys, I just picked up a low mileage 14b (60k) and was wondering if it would be a good idea to port the step from the hotside even though there's a big crack there?

Looks like a casting line, not a crack. They usually crack around the wastegate hole. Still a good idea to port it to remove the step, though.

I'd definitely open it up, make it match up to your manifold porting if that's already done.

Got a lot of my parts in this week. The 1 gallon fuel cell, external pump, filter, fittings/lines, AFPR, front subframe and control arm bushings, fire jacket, 5 point harness, and a driveshaft loop. Still waiting on the fuel rail fittings and "kit" stuff from STM for the afpr. Going to try selling a few things so I can order up the staging brake stuff soon too. Now I just need the snow to melt away.

I've got a 14b on the way finally. I should it have it bolted on for some transbrake testing in a couple weeks. I don't think it will break any records with my current converter, but it will give me something to arse around with in April while I wait for the traction to show up.

Hopefully the 14b does at least a 10.99 so I can hang with you guys for a while.

No major changes for the car this year, mostly just safety upgrades, and a smaller tire. Otherwise, I just need to lean on the 99HTA a little more, I haven't found its limit yet. I'd like to hit my 25.5/7.50 limit on it. I'm already pretty happy with it though for a little T3 turbo. It's not very much unlike chasing records on the smaller mitsu turbos. I'm running a much smaller turbo than most people at my ET. I use all the same tricks I learned on the 16g. Maybe the 14b will teach me a couple more. :) I like to think I'll put the next rev of the compound setup on the car this year too, but I've been saying that for years...

That should be interesting to see. A rwd 14B setup.

I don't think people see how much can be learned by trying to maximize a certain setup.
