Talon Down Need Help!

So i was driving today i shifted in to 2nd heard some clinking shifted into 3rd heard it more once i hit 4th stuff started falling out went to pull over made it to a parking lot i walked down the street found 2 side gears one cracked in half diff pin fell out in the parking lot... what a day i dont understand it drove fine until 10 mins before it happened my clutch felt odd and then it broke any advice of where to go from here would be greatly appreciated also pieces of the housing came out in chunks if that helps

Get a new tranny and call it a day!!! Did you have fluid in the transmission?? any idea why all of a sudden your tranny fell apart on you?? Prior to this misfortunate experience did the car give any signs of failure???

Most things work fine right up until they don't. Your gearbox has passed the "don't" point.

It sounds like it won't be rebuildable, either.

Properly maintained, and properly handled equipment doesn't seem to fail as much.

I ran across a 96 GST that was owned by a woman. This woman knew it was turbo charged and would sometimes get on it when passing cars but she says she never barked the tires, never raced, never put a lot of strain on the drivetrain, and has had regularly scheduled maintenance. The car runs great, shifts great, and still has great pull when you need it...

Then again I come across DSMs that teenagers, or young men have driven, raced, gave hell and still claim they gave the car proper maintenance but the engines knock, have oil leaks, gears grind, or need engines/transmissions.

A part of me doesn't feel it's always the cars fault even though most people/newbies try to point the blame to the car.

Sorry about the blown tranny man, but you didn't really help yourself here. And if you didn't stop immediately when you heard "clinking", and actually shifted through 2 more gears (and I'm guessing you weren't exactly idling), then I hate to say it but...what did you expect was gonna happen?

Despite the sarcasm, I feel for ya. I've had my own DSM tranny issues. As others stated, start looking for a new or used one; sounds like yours isn't even good for a core exchange.

the only sign of failure was the clutch felt loose if that makes sense i did the master cylinder about a month ago i still had the fluid in the reservoir when i made to the the parking lot so i dont think that had a relation but if any suggestion for a place to purchase a trans for a good price would help thanks

If you want something cheap to get you around, check the local salvage yards for a used one.

BTW - Off the top of my head, I can't see how a "loose feeling" clutch would have caused your tranny to grenade, unless it just wasn't disengaging and you were slamming it into gear and crunching synchros, or if you were dumping it at high revs in 1st. You may have just had two issues coincidently.

no need to make me look like an idiot because im not theses noises were quiet until 4th and until 4th you couldn't tell it was trans noise i understand that my clutch was acting up for this being the first time for this to happen to me i acted as fast as i could like i said it drove fine until it happened im not trying to start any problems but just because im a noob to this site is no reason to make me look bad and thanks for the sympathy now any other positive info will help a great deal thanks again

i wish i understood 2 but there wasn't even a grinding noise it sounds stupid for a trans breaking and all but i think one of my seals went bad maybe and lost all my fluid then it locked at this point there are probably a lot of possibilities

The same thing happened to me in my NA talon... I was just crusing and all of a sudden my tranny blew up. I guess there was a problem with those trannys cause I know 3 people who had NA DSM's and the same thing happened to them too..

Guys... DSM trannys aren't the best, but they don't just "blow up". Something causes it, whether a seal gives up and you lose fluid, it's abused (repeatedly dumping the clutch, forcing shifts, etc), just has 3497238947923 miles on it and is worn out, etc.

Karl...did you see any fluid anywhere before it started tossing metal?

well like you said something went wrong they don't just blow up and that's why i posted this topic i would like to get to the bottom of this personally i think a seal did go and i lost fluid therefore something locked up

I doubt it was a seal.... it has something to do with the differential. My friend is the one that knows about that tranny problem, but he told me its a ring that holds the spider gears in place and when the ring wears out the gears just slide throught and collapse. Its kinda hard to explain without looking. But he has a spare 420a tranny that he is trying to sell. he took that tranny apart and did something to it so it wouldnt blow up in the future

Here are 2 pics of my tranny.. like I said before, I was just crusing 55 on 5th gear and then all of a suden this happened out of nowhere.
