Whats the benefit of having a water cooled turbo? Will you guys be making a kit for the water line install?

Watercooled bearing housings help to extend the life of the turbocharger by preventing the oil in the bearing housing, especially the turbine side, from "coaking". This coaking will eventually carbonize causing excessive wear of the piston ring (or seal). Excessive wear of the piston ring and groove will cause the turbo to smoke prematurely. Watercooling is standard on automotive applications since turbo timers are not. So if you are a faithful user of the all mighty timer then watercooling is probably not a necessity. However, its an inexpensive added insurance policy for your turbocharger. Thanks to Nick and help from two of our tuner members who braved the elements we are able to release our water line kit in the next 2-3 days. Pictures and prices will be available on our website so I'll keep you posted.

V-trim - 48 lbs/min
50 trim - 49 lbs/min
H-3 - 50 lbs/min

Those are the "official" ratings from Garrett. With that being said, all three of these turbo combinations are very similar in flow numbers, they just make power in slightly different ways. The V-trim and 50 trim have indentical inducers, the 50 trim has a larger exducer (just under .25"). This larger exducer allows the turbo to be more efficient at higher boost levels. The H-3 has nearly a 60mm inducer that will provide more flow at lower boost levels than either the V or 50.

Hey, Dave, would you mind releasing the inducer and exducer numbers to us? The engineer in my like numbers, and it might help quell some of the bench racing arguments.

Beautiful. Thanks for the quick reply. Yes please keep me updated on the water line kit, I'd love to see the finish product! :D

Hi!

I sent you an e-mail earlier regarding some wholesale stuff.

First i would like to get this installed in my own car since people over here need visual proof before they buy anything ;)

It seems like the best deal for me is to get the "T04b complete turbo kit for dsm" pluss the internal WG option putting me at 699+125 = 824 correct? Is this with all lines including watercooling?

As far as mods go they are in my profile. Any idea how fitment will be with a 1g 6-bolt swapped in a 2g? I bought the car with all the mods allready installed. In fact i travelled from Norway to New york to try it out and ship it myself! I know it has a Fmic but not quite sure about brand etc.

Please advice as to any things i should buy along with this turbo. Clutch will be changed soon also!

Best regards
Tobias

There shouldn't be any issues with fitment. The kit you are referring to is only for a non-watercooled bearing housing. The water-cooled option is an extra $30 and we will have a water line kit out this week.

What o2 sensor housings are recommended with the T04B? Any that are a perfect match?

You can get away with using the stock 02 housing but i wouldn't recommend it. In my eyes its too small and could restrict the airflow. I would recommend going with the EvoIII O2 Housing or one as big as the evo in case you wanted one with a O2 dump or something. You can visit this site http://www.punishmentracing.com as they make good O2 housings you can look at and i have heard good reviews from other people about them

Not trying to argue with you here, but I have to chime in and recommend another vendor: 122performance.

My o2 housing is stout and made of thick steel.

www.122performance.com
I got the 02 housing set up for external off manifold, but the flange and welds are thick and solid.
It's not purdy, but it'll last the life of the car.

Nope its all good. I also recommend those guys as well they did a great job when my friend got his 02 housing. So now you have 2 places to pick :p :)

What? This is it, only 28 pages? :p I just odered a t04b h3 today, I'll let you know how it goes in about 2 weeks. Thanks David, will you drive up here with cash when I get it dynoed. ;)

I'd be all for it if it wasn't for the fact that it would cost more to get there and back than whatever money you could win. You may have to settle for a 37 cent stamp to deliver the cash.

I probably won't get to those numbers anytime soon but I'll take that 37cent stamp delivery When the time comes. It will probably cost more than 37 cents by then though. :thumb:

First off I would like to say, everyone in this post sucks. I just bought an EVOIII a month or so ago, havent put it on yet since the car is in storage and after reading these 25 pages I think I want a T04B V-trim

Since my car is fwd Im begining to think the EVO will spool up to quickly. So the guys that have this turbo on a fwd how do you like it as far as traction goes? & a comparison to the EVO or 16g turbo would be nice. So the T04B Vtrim is the smallest & will spool the fastest, as I do like quick spool but dont want to smoke the tires in every gear?

Now if I bought the kit with the feed/drain oil lines & the gaskets what all would I have to buy to get everything hooked up? Would my injen intake work or will I need to upgrade that to a 3", for the comp. outlet I just need a 90 elbow to go to my stock smic for the time being & my 2g ported O2 sensor housing will work but should probably eventually upgraded to a tubular one? What about injectors, I have HRC 625 but they actually flow around 580cc would this be enough or should I go 650? I would like to run 18-20 psi on pump 94 gas once I get a fmic.

Also are these fairly new to the market? How is the reliability on them? MHI will get 100K no problems, will these standup as well? Sorry for all the questions

Edit: Are you still offering the $50 off for dsm tuner member? :D

- Thanks.

- It's fwd.. It's a big turbo, You'll still have traction problems, Just higher in the rpms range.

a comparison to the 16g turbo would be nice.

- I bought a s16g and b16g, Then this. I regret the first two choices I made.

So the T04B Vtrim is the smallest & will spool the fastest, as I do like quick spool but dont want to smoke the tires in every gear?

- It is the smallest that they have advertised. Spool up will depend on your mods/tuning.

Now if I bought the kit with the feed/drain oil lines & the gaskets what all would I have to buy to get everything hooked up?

- It is a direct bolt on, As far as the turbo goes. Buy the oil feed/drain line kit and call it a day.

Would my injen intake work or will I need to upgrade that to a 3", for the comp. outlet?

- It will work, buy a 3" to whatever your intake pipe is, Then connect the smaller side to your intake, And the 3" side to your turbo. I made my whole 3" intake pipe from lowes, For cheap. But I do not have the mafs there anymore so it was easy.

- Yes.

What about injectors, I have HRC 625 but they actually flow around 580cc would this be enough or should I go 650? I would like to run 18-20 psi on pump 94 gas once I get a fmic.

-You will hafto see if you are maxing them out. I personally have 680's.

How is the reliability on them? MHI will get 100K no problems, will these standup as well?

- I have not had one problem with my turbo yet.

believe it or not, this t04b is MUCH more drivable in a FWD then my 16g was

1st gear i could NEVER go full throttle with the 16g, at 3500rpm, it just lit the tires up so bad it never accelerated

WIth the t04b, set even at 16psi, it spools much smoother and doesnt have enough time to create that false torque curve, so it never lights the tires up at 3500rpm, and just tends to accelerate on the limit of traction, and only at about 6000rpm or so it starts to spin the tires, right before the shift, so it accelerates much better in 1st then my 16g did, which is one reason i really like it

Just some personal experience for you :thumb:

I would upgrade the smic if I were you.

FMIC is next after the DSMLink :thumb:

I'm just not sure about the lag. From what I've read this turbo would hit full boost ~4000 rpm's. Which as mentioned will help me out being fwd but I don't know if I'll like it or not. The problem is this is my first turbo car so I dont have alot of experience with different size turbos. I've only driven in my own so I only have the t25 to compare it too. I do know that when I first got the car and everything was stock there were times when I went to pass or merge and it took awhile for the boost to kick in. Now that everything is freed up, the t25 almost spools instantly. Which I like for a daily driver but not for my tires. So I didnt like this lag, but maybe it seemed worse since the stock turbo is so small and I wasn't making much power. So what does the t04b feel like in the lower (2500-3800) rpms? really sluggish?

My car feels like a normal car but as soon as 4,000rpms come instead of like a normal car that just keeps accelerating at the same speed, It's like BAM and you just take off. My car really takes off at 4,000rpms, That is with only a few adjustments on the maft and boost at 15psi.
