I was contacted this morning and asked to dyno test the turbo. I don't have a DSM here to put it on, the lot is full of EVO's these days. The 3 DSM's that are here are monster build ups and would be a pain to convert.

I did read all of this and will continue to sell this turbo. As I said, they come with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty and I am confident in the part.

Rock on.

well who is going to warranty it?? Turbo.com?? HAHAHAHA the guy earlier in this post after 200 miles was told no by them, unless you are stepping up to warranty them??? if you do. I wish you luck.

In my opinion, the only way i could sell this to a DSMer, is if they argued they only $500 to spend, and just HAD to have the port and flapper. But i wouldnt be recommending it. Just say, i thing for reliablity you should go with the MHI turbo, but if this is teh one you want ok. SO that way when they call back and their turbo failed, i wouldnt feel like i sold them on that turbo b/c i was confident in the product. Sorry i have a conscience, i can not do that just to make a few extra bucks as a vendor...

I will agree whole-heartedly that proving/disproving whether this turbo is any good is not slowboy's responsibility, but either was tearing it down and comparing it to an Evo 3 16G made by MHI. I also understand that you're mostly concerned with the reliability of the units, but I doubt that a few dyno pulls are going to cause it to fail (and if it does, point proven), so there shouldn't be much concern about the reliability to determine the performance of the turbo. As for the reliability, besides the design, the metalurgy reports should help determine that once they come back. It's quite easy to determine (roughly) the structural properties of the turbo by the contents of it's metals.
And we all probably shouldn't be so hard to judge items in the future just because they are "made in China". I don't know for sure, but it would probably also be worthwhile to ask Slowboy where their "SBR Exhaust Manifolds" are cast, what materials it is made of and why it's almost an exact copy of the Mitsu manifolds? Also made thicker for "space/clearance on turbos with larger compressor covers"? Hmm.. Care to comment Slowboy? I'm definitely not making any accusations, don't get me wrong, we know that this manifold has been proven to perform, but there isn't much information out there on where it was made and what it was made from.

P.S. - If Bushur wants to warranty these units for 12 months/12,000 miles, then that's his decision as a business person. No need to laugh about it and make comments, right? He's simply standing behind the products he sells, and I would expect no less from any respectable dealer. (which is the reason you aren't planning on selling these units in the first place, right slowboy?)

Now that's the kind of information I was looking for! Thanks Mike and the rest of the Slowboy crew for taking the time to do some research and provide us with some useful information!

I think it was the "read between the lines" guy that brought Turbochargers.com and other vendors into this discussion when he inaccurately stated that TC, Buschur, RRE and Slowboy were ABSOLUTELY NOT selling the chinese copy EVO GT turbo. Since that guy had absolutely no idea what he was talking about (except for Slowboy, he was right in saying that they didn't sell the knockoff), I made a few calls and wasn't too surprised to find out that not only did TC sell these, they were the distributor/source! The more I read about those guys, the more inclined I am to believe that they're intentionaly trying to mislead the DSM community regarding these turbos just to make a fast buck. This quote from their website says it all:

"This Evo 3 Big 16G turbo is sold also as a GT model. Both turbos have smaller turbine scroll for quicker spool up. The GT turbo at $580.00 is the same turbo with the additions of a full port job and 34 mm waste gate port and flapper disc."

I think we all know it's NOT the "same turbo".

How reputable could TC be if they'll discuss the financial affairs of one of their customers with another? How is it any of Buschur's business if SBR doesn't pay TC's bills? It isn't, and that's some shady business right there. It was out of line for "Tommy" to say anything about it and it was out of line for Dave to bring it up in a discussion regarding the quality of a particular turbo. If I were a vendor, I'd think twice about using TC as a supplier. But that's just me...you guys do what you want, it's still a free country.

I've seen enough to know that I won't be touching the Evo III GT with a ten-foot pole. I'll be purchasing a true MHI turbo, preferably from a vendor that didn't buy them from turbochargers.com.

well our manifolds are made within the USA. And if you would llike further information of where there are made or about the part itslef, feel free to call in and talk to me. I would gladly explain how we get stuff casted!! :thumb: our very first run of turbine housings a few years ago were casted in Tailand first. But our rejection rate was getting high for junk in that first run. So we decided to redo tooling at a USA plant to get the quality control back up. So now everything we cast goes through the USA plant, including the manifolds.

I am sorry if it came off that way, The laugh was towards TC.com warranting them. If Dave so feels up to backing the warranty himself, I wish him the best of luck. That is all. Yes that is correct. the only way i would sell this is if people decide they want nothing but a cheap replacement, and know that it may not last long. B/c i would not warranty it. As for now. we are not planning on carrying it.

Thanks

Well thank you very much for the Reveiw SBR.

Glad to see your keeping the quality in check and letting us DSMers know what is going on. I found that comparrison page to be very informative and usefull. :thumb:

I will continue to sell these turbos until I see problems with them. I have been told by TC that they are going to warranty them for 12 month 12,000 miles. I am not offering the warranty BUT you can rest assured that if you guy it from US and it fails in the 12 months then TC is going to stand behind it for US as they have told US they would.

This is the best deal out there on a ported/35 mm flapper big 16g turbo that I can see. Also I am actually making a little bit of a profit on them for a change. With all the whores in the market (Good for consumers, bad to pay bills) the profit on turbos absolutely SUCKS. TC came to me with these turbos, and at the time did not say they were made in China, and said that the guys that would be selling them would sell them all at the same price of $580. To me that kicked ass as now I wouldn't have to keep dropping my price each week to compete until the prices were so low nobody makes a little.

Now that I do know who makes them and where they are made I could honestly care less. I still think it is a quality looking piece and at a good price. If they don't fail on our customers I will continue to carry them, if they do fail we will warranty them and we will no longer carry them.

I am done with this one. Thanks for including us.

One other thing. The ring between the turbo and manifold, useless, keep the bolts tight and you won't blow gaskets. We have only ported/installed/run/set records without this ring for 15 years and 1,000's of turbos. The ring belongs in a hogs nose. The larger volute I also do not believe is going to hurt horsepower and may even help with it. We have ported that area of the turbocharger for years in many applications to see a gain in top end HP.

Seems like the customers aren't the only ones having the wool pulled over their eyes by TC.com. It strikes me funny that the first post I made about these turbos, which lead to the truth coming out that they aren't even close to being the same as their MHI counterparts, actually seemed to be the source that informed both The Speed Factor and Logic Performance that these turbos weren't exactly what they were being distributed as. Again, you can't blame the shop for being misled- Martin knows how I feel about this in retrospect- but I can blame TC.com for doing what seems to be VERY shady business, leaving out key facts about the products, and then airing dirty business-related laundry about another shop to whoever inquires...the professionalism seems to be diminishing by the minute.

This is the best deal out there on a ported/35 mm flapper big 16g turbo that I can see. Also I am actually making a little bit of a profit on them for a change. I understand that you run a business and respect you and your shop extremely, but I'm not so sure that selling a product that has a great deal of question regarding its build quailty, level of performance over time, and overall durability/reliabilty without first testing it is the most respectable way to make a dollar. Many DSMers have been very loyal to such shops as Buschur and RRE who are indeed the cornerstones of our passion, but it is disheartening to me that the only evidence these places have to back up selling these turbos is that it "looks" or "seems" as good as the MHI version, that it will make them some money since they are cheaper at wholesale cost, and that they were told these turbos are worthy to be sold to us.

Now that I do know who makes them and where they are made I could honestly care less. I still think it is a quality looking piece and at a good price.
OMG Damn...with a statement like that and no DSM in the shop to test these out I wish you the best of luck in trying to sell these turbos to knowledgeable, informed customers.

With all of this being said, I just received my ported and clipped MHI Evo 3 16G that I bought from the Speed Factor today. It definitely appears to be an MHI unit, but I'm a little skeptical. The reason for my weariness is not the fact that I bought my turbo from the Speed Factor- I DO have faith in Martin and Berty who I've talked to personally- but the fact that they are moving, so my turbo was drop-shipped from TC.com. As I said before, I no longer trust TC.com at all as a result of this entire situation. Martin has assured me that I have nothing to worry about, but I'm still almost hesitant to install this on my car for that reason alone after reading this thread. Hearing all of these horror stories coming out of TC.com the thought of my turbo coming from there scares the sh!t out of me, my wallet, and my car. :barf:

I like sentence # 7

The first two years I was in business, I bought from turbo.com, and I would agree 100% with the statement found on RRE's page.

Good luck getting TC to warranty a turbo, 99% of the time it falls upon the shop who sells the turbo. Gosh David... you have the blinders on! Call me!

I agree with the first few sentences, however this area of the turbine housing is the most critical part... the way the EVO III GT volute was designed, it will not perform well vs. an MHI unit, its just that simple.

The turbo you received was an MHI turbo and you have nothing to worry about. I haven't streered you wrong and don't plan on starting now. ;) While the GT turbo is still up in the air fact of the matter is that TC.com is the biggest distributor for the MHI turbos so it's kind of hard to buy anywhere else for a price that allows you to stay competitive. When it comes down to it the EVOIII all of us sell and love comes from the same place so i don't see where there is a problem there. Don't worry Shane :thumb:

:dsm:

I know Martin, I'm not worried about anything on your behalf whatsoever. I've had nothing but a great shopping experience from you guys at the Speed Factor. I guess what I'm trying to say is all this talk has left a really bad taste in my mouth about TC.com. You have reassured me about their MHIs in the past and I understand that they are such a huge part of this industry when it comes to supplying Mitsu turbos. However, this thread- and other ones about the same situation- just read like a "Buyer Beware" to me, and it seems like TC.com's name is all over the problem source. Perhaps I was too vague in describing my concerns in my state of frustration- I will be putting the MHI turbo I received on my car of course, and it is definitely an MHI piece, but with the business I've heard of TC.com doing it makes me feel almost like nothing is out of the question with them- which is where the doubt sets in. How far will companies go to cut costs on these integral parts of our motors, and how far can a business go in avoiding the absolute bottom line truth about a product (referring to TC.com's style of business)? Imitations like the GT emerging just makes you wonder how worried you have to be when you buy from even the most utilized distributor of a part.

The E316G you had sent to me is in great shape Martin, and I appreciate the amount of help and support you and Berty have given me regarding the turbo and any other questions I've had. Fortunately for DSMers, the last time I checked the Speed Factor has chosen not to offer these GTs until further results come out on the quailty of the pieces. And even if you did decide to sell them, while you guys have made an effort to learn more about the quality of these turbos before you sell them to customers, other companies have inexplicably relied on hear-say and outer appearance to determine whether or not to sell them. IMHO you deserve our business, and most of all our respect for that much alone. :thumb:

wow shane i really appreciatte the kind words. We do our best and when a customer give you a review like that it makes all the headaches worth while. Enjoy the turbo and go kick some ass with it this season. :thumb:

about three months ago i bought an EVO3 16G turbo from TC.com and for the record it was ported, flapped, and it was 550$. It was also a real Mitsubishi turbo. TD05 cast on the compressor side and all.

yeah, a couple of months ago when they were working on introducing these turbos they did a promo for the real MHI part, ported and flapper for $550.

Might be a repost, but RRE finally changed their description of the EVOGT to show that they aren't MHI. And they have the real one further down.

Sure, it was a good way to get rid of MHI stock so they could bring in the CHINA EVO III GT... you got a great deal on a good turbo, but that is why you did.
