Swapping transmission, how much time?

Looking at buying a manual transmission from Jack Transmission and am wondering how much labor is involved in swapping the trannys.
This is for a 1996 Eagle Talon AWD.
I have seen posts where people are saying up to 3 hours, but I just asked a mechanic at the local shop here about the time to swap a tranny, and he said it's 10.4 hours!

Mechanics are going to quote "book" time. That way when they finish in 3 they can charge for 10. In a shop when done by somebody who knows what they are doing it's closed to 3. If it's at the DSM shootout in a parking lot maybe 45 mins, including a fresh clutch. LOL.

It's very dependent on the car, I can do my own car where every single bolt comes out like butter in an hour, one that hadn't had it out in 10+ years and seen any bit of road salt, plan a day.

If its at the shootout in the parking lot adjacent to the econolodge its all night.
True story. Back then it was a ponderosa steakhouse. We had 2 3kgt on stands and a dsm. Cop showed up about 2am. "What ch'all boys doin..."
Just racers trying to get home by monday....cop pauses...." ok y'all boys clean up your mess 'ya hear?"

In my head it’s a six hour job for a first timer. All wheel drive add an extra hour. There will always be something that holds you up and takes time, it may be a stuck ball joint, stripped bolt, etc. going back in same thing

If you’ve done it before I’d say 4 hour job

Also there is a difference between slapping in the trans and doing it right. Doing it right means replacing all of the seals and torquing all of the bolts to spec. If you are paying some one to do it, you are paying them to do it right so expect six hours but the mechanic who’s done it before can get it done in 3-4 hours

I dont take apart any ballpoint, tie rods etc anymore. I dont even take the axle out of the hub. I undo the lower control arm at the backside. This gives enough room to swing the knuckle out and get the axle out of the trans nd just let it hang from the knuckle. I also quit using a floor jack for the trans. I use a cherry picker and one point of contact. Once its ready to pull and it's hooked up its on the ground in 2 min. Putting back in is 10min or less by myself. Everything else is just putting bolts back in place.

Exactly how I do it, much faster than doing it the "normal" way.
