Straight Pipe or Muffler

Well a straight pipe will obviously be louder, illegal on the street and may flow a bit more. If you plan on driving the car on the street I would put a muffler on it.

Your not going to get a noticeable amount of hp out of either of them so go with whatever you think sounds better

Well i got a 3inch straight pipe, and keep my other full exhaust and all i need to do is put it back on for emissions and stuff, but i noticed my turbo was spooling a little faster.

OP: not sure what part of the city you're from, but I know a fella from Aurora that had an older Supra with the I6.
Anyway, he got pulled over by a city cop right around 16th street mall for an open exhaust/noise infraction. He had no cat (he may have one now) and a straight pipe.

Luckily the cop didn't notice the lack of a cat and he got away with a fix-it ticket.

Just be wary when having an open pipe on the street :thumb:

Just throw on race style mufflers. They are straight through perforated cores. I'm running 2 Magnaflow mufflers; 5" round mid system and a dual outlet oval muffler at the rear.

Its not worth it to use a straight pipe when there are sufficient mufflers that work great performance wise.

for you're first question, pipe or can?

can, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it and as wiseman said... simply go HUGE and u wont have a flow issue any way :p

Thanks guys and im from thornton, and work in Aurora. Never really drive my TSI in denver unless im at the Big theater down there on 16th street also my bro has a 4g eclipse and he has a straight pipe and he uses as a daily driver like me and he has never got pulled over maybe just because im not directly in city.

I have a straight pipe and I dd my car and haven't had a problem with the law, it's all about how you drive though. Out sounds really good imo especially since you can hear the turbo even at idle.

I dd my car, and its straight piped. Ive never gotten pulled over for it, it sounds pretty good too

Go with a can.. When I was putting my 3" down pipe back exhaust on I was worried about the car sounding like a complete rice burner. The turbo however reduces the normal ricer noise that we heard from other cars and I have two resonators in the system also. They create a really nice low tone at idle... What I'm saying is don't straight pipe it, run 3" down pipe back with no CAT, two resonators, and a high flow straight through muffler.. You will be happy with the sound, and performance will not suffer much. My only concern however is because of the resonators if I get turbulent flow rather than laminar flow in my exhaust.

I say go with a Borla muffler, they make some that have an S bend and are great to ensure your not robbed of power. They make a much better noise than a straight pipe if you ask me.

I hope to do a 3 inch exhaust soon. i know someone what works for a muffler shop that may can get me two 6 foot 3 inch pipes i can bend in his shop as needed. I would have to change the cat and resonator so they were 3 inch as well.

Ok, just don't forget resonators... I think you will like the sound at idle with those

I'm doing a 3" downpipe to a stock cat back with an eletronic cutout. No back pressure when I want and quiet when I want...
