Straight pipe no cat and muffler

I was woundering what kind of gain would i get from putting a test pipe and no muffler on. both straight pipes on a stock exhaust. better turbo spool?

I wouldn't bother doing anything like that on a stock exhaust. It won't sound good and won't really yield much of a performance gain because the stock piping will still be highly restrictive. Just buy a full aftermarket exhaust system or have one made and be done with it.

I have a cat delete, with a non stock muffler..

Not really sure if it helped at all on a stock ish exhaust..

Like I said, it would yield no noticeable gain. If he has a stock exhaust on his car, I'm assuming he hasn't upgraded his turbo yet either meaning he's already going to have ridiculously quick spool (especially if it's a 2g). Either way, if you hack the muffler off and punch out the cat, you'll just end up with a louder, crappy sounding, stock performing car so I wouldn't bother.

To answer you dude, not much if any gain, definitely not worth the time, effort or money (if any) invested to do it, most that will happen is you'll fail your inspection for illegal exhaust since a cat and muffler are required and have to pay to do it right anyway. Just go aftermarket rather than a hack job.

I wouldnt bother hacking up the stock exhaust. You could do it to make it louder if your wanting that. I bought my car in stock form. I kept my stock catback unmolested so I could keep it and made my own custom exhaust cheap. You could feel a little gain but it wasnt enough to go "woo" about.

This is true also. After I made my custom straight pipe I let my girlfriend take it out for a drive. She got pulled over for it being to "loud". She just told them I just bought the car and it was like this when I got it. They were nice enough to let her go with a warning just for the fact that she told them that I was going to fix it.

You won't see any noticeable gains from the stock exhaust, until you get rid of the restrictive stock downpipe.

Thanks all which actually helped. So the down pipe is restricted in what way? i though the down pipe was just a regular down pipe, what makes it restricted?

They are talking about the size of the pipe. It doesn't matter if you remove the cat and muffle with the stock size piping, or down pipe. All you are getting is a loud exhaust. No Great power gains.

At least get a 2.5" down pipe and a 3" cat back. I don't know if Colorado has inspections test for cars but check that before removing your cat.

The downpipe along with the rest of the factory exhaust is restrictive because of the small diameter.

The problem with the downpipe is that the size of the pipe is restrictive to exhaust gas flow. So unless you increase the capacity for flow through the rest of the exhaust from the starting point, going without your cat or muffler will really only grant you the additional noise factor. True that having less restriction from the cat back will help with flow, its like the difference between blowing through a foot long straw and a six inch long straw of the same diameter. Not much difference.

I have a full 3 inch turbo back exhaust with a borla muffler and no catalytic converter and all I noticed was sound change really. But I do have a td06 20g and I never did get the chance to dirive my car on a stock setup. But I've been around alot of stock cars and haven't noticed anything other then the sound and how loud it is when im at full throttle.

Since this is a thread about exhaust and it seems OP's question has been answered maybe someone could answer mine for me? I want to cut out my resonators. I have a 2.5" o2 housing and 3" catless downnpipe and catback. It has two big resonators on it and it is honestly kind of quiet. I have a fp manifold on the way so I'm hoping that helps the sound a bit but I was wondering if it would sound good without the resonators?

Sound is subjective, but a lot of us have no resonators, and some run no muffler.

Well that's true. I just don't ever want my car to get that tinny rattly sound that a lot of Honda's get. I like loud cars my old Z28 didn't have mufflers and I loved it. I am really considering cutting them off but I want to know that it's not going to sound terrible. Also do you think I will notice a difference in sound from the fp manifold? I have the stock 2g right now. If I will then I am going to wait to cut off the resonators.

NA will sound different than boosted. Keep it apples to apples. 420a cars sound tinny to me.

FP mani may afford a slightly louder spool-up sound. Mine's about the same since swapping to one.
