So my car has the stock turbo with a bunch of shaft play. I am deciding between rebuilding it and replacing the exhaust housing that i can get for 45 bucks or going with some type of upgrade turbo either eve 3 16g or 14b. I have a fmic that was never used, just eye candy. I know people say the stock turbo isn't worth rebuilding but i can do it for less than 100 bucks. My car is a daily driver and I'm not looking for big hp, around 300 would be nice. When i pulled my down pipe off the other day i found coolant in the o2 housing. I just did a head gasket job around 2000 miles ago. I think the coolant is leaking out of the turbo. So my question is, is it worth it to buy the 16g and new piping for fmic or just rebuild the stock turbo? I have an intake, boost gauge, exhaust (stock manifold, 2.5 inch dp and 3. fatback tanabe), and greedy bov. Can I just bolt a 16g on or would i need more mods? I don't have a wideband, just a narrowband. Any answers/thoughts would be appreciated. I would be doing all the work myself so no shop charges.

I personally would ditch your factory snail in favor of the 16g. You can run it, as long as you keep the boost levels down, and plan on injectors, fuel pump and a tune at the least. You will need a mhi flanged exhaust manifold, the 16gs o2 housing and any feed and return lines you may need. A friend and I just swapped his 14b over to a 16g, and its a blast. Spools quick, and its good to like 350 if I remember correctly. There may be a few more parts you may need, Ive never worked on a 2g myself, but theres plenty of posts on here discussing just that.

well at this point i only have enough for the turbo if i go with a true 16g and not ebay version. Ive heard that the ebay ones can hold up but i don't want to take the risk. Can i get by with my stock manifold for now on a 16g? Also can't I just port my o2 housing. Im still in high school and on a really tight budget.

Your car should have a garrett based turbo, totally different flange. I have seen adapters, but I wouldnt trust them really. Best bet would be a 1g factory cast mani, about 40 bucks on ebay if you look around. The o2 housing is also a different flange for the t3s, also find a stock 1g piece fairly cheap. We actually are using the ebay 16g, but cant say anything on reliability as shortly after install we lost the headgasket LOL. Instead of ebay, you should also hit up the classifieds, the guys here usually put their old manis and downpipes up for sale when they upgrade.

SO much wrong here. Let's break it down, shall we?

Sure Garrett built it, but the turbine inlet flange is the same as any other DSM ever built.

An adapter to make a DSM turbo fit a DSM manifold? HUGE market for such a piece.

Ah yes, the 1G manifold.....the one with smaller runners which cracks easier than any other OEM manifold available for our cars. Wise move.

A T25 is a T2-series turbo. Even if it DIDN'T fit our manifold and o2 housing, which it already does, nothing from a T3-series turbo would fit it either.

Probably a bit of a crystal ball looking into the future of your build.

If it were possible for me to negative-rep a post 5 times, this one earned it for sure. :applause:

This. This made my night.

OP a 14b can usually be found fairly cheap in the classifieds, will easily reach your goals and bolt right on for you.

Well my bad. All 5 of my dsms have been 1gs and like I said, never worked on a 2g . all of the garrett based manifolds ive seen are quite different from my 14b and the ebay 16g. I dont mean to argue, and I will bow down to your massive experience Justin. Both my friend and I are planning for hx35s or something like that. The ebay turbo was a temporary replacement. Listen to Justin, he does this for money, I just play with them. Im also thinking about t3 series not the t25 LOL. Always thought the t25 was a t3 flange for some reason. Learn something new every day LOL.

You probably should get tht t25 off the car ASAP if you are still driving it. That t25 likes to literally go to pieces when it fails sometimes. You don't want it contaminating your oil.

If I were in your shoes I would sprout for the 14b. Cheaper than a true mhi evo3 and still better than the t25. You could go a t28 route but they are not as commonly found as the 14b. Good luck and post back with any issues or concerns.

Hey thanks for the feedback guys. I located a 14b on the classifieds for 200. Also a 02 housing to fit it. I think its from a 1g. Will the 14b bolt up to my manifold or will I need a new one/adapter. The 14b is also from 1g. Im hoping to also upgrade my fuel pump and hook up my fmic.

The 14b will bolt on your car and be good to go. You don't need another 02 housing or manifold. Yours are better then 1gs to begin with don't change them.

Ok is the 14b water cooled the same as t15? Will I need new oil feed/return lines?

It is water cooled. As for the fitting I'm gonna let someone else chime in because its been a while and I don't remember.

Forget the 1g o2 housing.And stick with the stock 2g o2 housing.

A 14b,16g,20g etc are not direct bolt ins for you 2g guys.1g's yes.

The 2g oil feed is fed from the OFH,where the 1g is off the left side of the head.

Here This will explain it better than I can.http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...2558-14b-install-2g-homebrew-install-kit.html

That's honestly a little steep for a used 14B unless it's in exceptional condition.

Direct bolt-on.

yeah i kinda figured I would need a new oil feed place. And yes the 14b is a fresh rebuild. They guy has it on the classifieds

I just recently installed a 14b rebuilt by Justin. I got mine for 150 off of a friend but it turned out I needed a new shaft, compressor and turbine wheel.

With the rebuild all said and done, I decided to feed from the head to maintain the oil pressure a 14b is used to (1gs turbos are fed from the head, hence this conclusion). To switch over I bought a plug for the 2g oil filter housing to cap off the t25's feed source. To feed from the head you need a new feed line. I purchased one off of ebay, fit right up (check the forum for to ensure you get the proper banjo bolt in the kit for the 2g head and the 14b)

Besides this, the 2g oil return was reused after narrowing the bolt hole distance a little and a j-pipe kit was purchased. As for water lines, you can bend the 2g ones to fit. So far (three months) no issues what so ever.

Long story short, 14b is good, don't pay more than 100-150 in my opinion, and makes sure you get it rebuilt.

Ok guys I just found a 14b on craigslist with no shaft play and no cracks. I was wondering if it will run my dmic well enough without lag?

Don't forget your going to need a J pipe to come off the turbo to what ever piping you will be using to connect to your intercooler. If your going front mount you will want to pick up a J pipe that shoots over to the driver side and if your keeping the stocker then you will want one that shoots over to the passenger side. They can be found on most of our supporting vendor websites. Personally id look for one on the classifieds or post a wanted add.

Most of the MhI based turbos spool stupid fast and is rarely a concern. If its not spooling fast theres usually something wrong like a wastegate hanging open.

He has a front mount. Its stated above somewhere.

Ok so I think i have everything figured out that I will need accept intercooler piping. Im on a budget so i don't want to spend money for a universal kit with extra i won't need. Where are some good places to buy bent pipes and silicone coupler?
