My 98 GSX has a 3IN HKS carbon cat-back exhaust, anyways i am looking for something alot quiter like the stock exhaust that comes on the 98's. Even with the silencer in its still really loud, you can just feel the rumble when its idleing outside my house.

Does anyone know the specs on the stock exhaust or where i can get one or one like it? thanks

Many folks upgrade their stock exhaust, so you can probably go to the classifieds on this site or start prowling for threads where someone has upgraded their exhaust. They'd have a stock exhaust laying in the garage. I'm weird and keep all of my stock parts when I upgrade, but most people probably just want the stuff gone.

I have a Frankenstein exhaust. I got a 3" SS exhaust, cut the muffler off and had a Magnaflow twin tip welded on with custom polished twin tips. It's louder probably because you have no catalytic converter. Mine's too loud for my taste, but it's not too bad. I've heard that putting an in-line muffler where the cat would go is one way to knock down a bunch of the noise. I'm guessing you have a big can muffler. If so, it doesn't do much to muffle the exhaust.

One thing you might care about is that everyone upgrades the exhaust for a reason. With a bigger turbo and higher boost, the stock exhaust is a major restriction. You'll definitely have to re-adjust your boost gauge.

Whoever put that exhaust on may have also ported their O2 housing to match the larger downpipe inlet (I did). If you put a stock system on this, you'll have a step in the exhaust flow which will hurt performance even more.

I'd personally add a more effective muffler and either a high-flow cat or in-line muffler where the cat goes. It'd require cutting, fitting, welding. I did all of the cutting/fitting and took everything to a welder who tacked the pieces together, then I took them home and test-fit just to make sure. Then he TIG welded everything together. I have a long thread on that project if you can dig it up.

If you do go for a stock exhaust, make sure it's for a 2g GSX or TSi-AWD. They're different for FWD cars (GST, TSi).

The stock exhaust is gonna feel like a chocked chicken, my buddy kept getting complaints on his apexi full exhaust and sold it for cheap to switch back to quieter exhaust then hated it and bought a Megan full exhaust and it wasn't as loud but felt better than the apexi with his b16g.

Thanks fo the info kenamond, yes it has no cat, I guess Ill put a cat on and try that first! As far as turbo she's gotta 20g boostin 25lbs so I guess a stock exhaust would be like trying to run a sprint while breathing through a straw.

Keep in mind that a high flow catalytic converter (or a normal one) are expensive, because they have precious metals inside. A 2nd muffler in the same location might help at a much cheaper cost (probably under $100 for a stainless Magnaflow).

If your exhaust is stainless, you might have to search around for someone to do the welding. The first couple of shops I went to flat out refused because it was stainless. I'd find a place that will agree to do the work before you buy anything. Ask them for inlet/outlet sizes, how big the muffler body can be (how long, wide, and tall), etc. It all has to fit under the car in the pocket where the old stock cat was and it has to connect at each end to your existing SS system. They should be able to measure things and give you some guidance on what to order. There are all sorts of shapes and sizes for mufflers. Not sure about cats though.

Anyway, if you do this, post back with pictures and results. I still want to add either a high flow cat or an in-line muffler to quiet mine down (particularly at 2800rpm), and it'd be good to find out how effective the cat or muffler is.

Good luck!

Is it just loud all the time or is there a specific part of the sound, ie. drone, that you don't like? I did a lot of fab work to tune exhaust systems on the last few cars I had and think I can help.

im running HF at with a 3" mangaflow set up (1 resantor 1 muffler) it sounds great pretty quiet when cruisin and a nice rumble a WOT. The hks carbon ti is a loud muffler for sure

You can get a 3" hi flow cat on Ebay for around $45 shipped. That would help with noise and flow a lot better than the stock muffler. They are much cheaper than resonators.
