I just got done installing 750cc's, 3" GM Maf and ver. 2.01 maft (verhicle profile is updated) I was able to get my car to idle fairly well lastnight by setting up the maft to read stock injectors and by having the idle knob of the maft set to 1. Well, I got my logger working tonight and logged it for a while at idle. I noticed it was very lean according to the O2 trim. It was hovering around 120-125% which, if I remember correctly, was full lean for a 1G. Anyhow, I noticed that when my brother covered the (stock & unmodified) bov with his hand that the car would immediately richen up. The O2 trims with the bov outlet blocked would hover in the 70% range. We could hear and feel air either being sucked in or let out. It was kinda hard to tell but I am pretty sure it was taking air in. So, I assume this bov is leaking. Can anyone explain this? This is the first time I am able to vent the bov to atmosphere and I am not sure how it should behave. It seems very wrong to me that just by covering the bov outlet it would richen up the car by almost 50%???? I do have vacuum going the bov, is this incorrect? Should it not have vacuum if it is being dumped to atmosphere? This is freaky since the bov is before the GM maf and I would have figured it would be able to compensate. However, with 750cc injectors my 800rpm adjustment on my afc should be at 10-15% negative not positive 2% like it is now. I guess this bov was causing me problems from day one. Can anyone comment on this? Perhaps the stock bov needs to be crushed?? Here is a pic of where it is located before the maf. I probly need a new bov. If that is the case, what is recommend for under 200 bucks that will fit the stock bov flange? Thanks

do the dodgemod outlined in the Tech section and that will help it seal.
There is a night and day difference in the sound and function between a stock 1G BOV and a 1G BOV that has the dodgemod done to it.

Save your self the money and time fabricating a new flange.

IMHO.

i am running a 1g blow off valve on my vented turbo omni and i just crushed it last night actually, its a night and day difference. it leaked at idle and under boost, the car is much more responsive now at part throttle accel and it feels more composed across the board. i had the benefit of doing it in a large vice witha vacuum tester and the valve began opening at 14psi, but it leaked far below that when in actual use. smashed it down so it doesnt open until 22 psi and the difference was really quite impressive. id say crush it a bit for tighter response and do the vacuum mod as well, it will basically be a nonadjustable type s at that point

it also cured the screeching sound i was getting under boost and couldnt figure out.. it sounded like i had 2 turbos spooling.

What exactly is crushing? I've seen the vac mod before, and I've heard of crushing alot, but never seen any vfaq's or how-to's on crushing one.

you put it in a vice and physically smash it, it compresses the spring inside so it has more tension and opens the valve later. having a vacuum testor so you know exactly where its opening make it much more precise

Why would you put a Blow Off Valve in a vise? That is a *cheap, *lazy way to do the job. The Dodgemod has been proven to hold over 30 psi.

Hmm Lets turn a good BOV into scrap.

IMO thats what you should do with stock 2G bov's. Vice them. Don't let a 1G BOV touch a vice except to hold it still while you drill a refrence port.

Follow the procedure and good things happen. Crush a 1G bov with a vice and you get a damaged bypass valve that no one would ever want to buy from you when you want to upgrade.

whatever.

the fact that you are worried about the resale value of the bov does not make a crushed 1g bov any less effective. no, its not as nice as the dual vac mod, but it works. i got my bov for free, i dont really care about ever selling it, i only want to run 20 psi.. should i go out and buy parts and spend a lot of time modding my bov, or crush it in 5 minutes with the exact same result.

i had a leaking bov yesterday during the day, i went to my buddies house, crushed it, it doesnt leak anymore. sounds like it worked to me.

you know that little hex adjuster on top of a type s? its adjusting spring tension. same thing as crushing a 1gt, it increases spring tension.. so it doesnt leak anymore. this has been done thousands of times and works perfectly fine. you can call me lazy, ill call you arrogant, and in the end we will both still have a 1g bov that does what we want. if i were going to run 20+ psi and wanted to keep using my 1g i would do the vac mod, but its pointless for my goals.
