Need turbo advice.. Look at this pic ###.

I was thinkin about buying this turbo off ebay.. but the guy says the housing has a crack in it and needs to be ported.. Think this is something I could do myself with the proper tools? Or do ya think I should forget it?

You can do it yourself. Porting isn't that hard just a little time consuming. Here is a link to the VFAQ for it:

Porting won't help if it has a crack, chance is it's too deep a crack to just port and take care of. What kind of turbo are you looking for? EVO III 16g's are still fairly cheap and are definately a great turbo for the daily driver pump gas enthusiast.

Maybe he meant 1) it has a crack and 2) it needs to be ported, not it has a crack and needs to be ported because of it.

Yup. Thats exactly where mine cracked. But Im buying a used exhaust housing with a 38mm flapper and no cracks, and then rebuilding it.

You can always try that. Total damage to my wallet? $130 for housing and Rebuild kit, a 12-pack of beer, and about 3 to four hours.

Porting is something you do to increase airflow, there would be no "NEED" to port it. However, a crack means the turbo is pretty useless unless its very minor. I wouldn't risk it.
