i bought a new 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST with a manual transmission. I use to own the vehicle two years ago and sold it to a friend and recently just purchased the car back. He drove the car down to me on a loaner battery(his moms battery) and the starter was on its way out. He drove the car an hour to me no problems other than the starter being on its way out so he had to tap it and turn the ignition a few times to get it going.. so I changed the starter and bought a new battery thinking the car should right right up. Now the car still won’t start and makes a whirling/grinding noise from the starter. I can’t figure out what it the reasoning? Maybe I installed wrong or something. It’s frustrating me and I need some help. I checked the grounds and cleaned the grounds and the areas around them with a wire brush. I really need some help on lost...I have a video of the noise but it’s too large of a file to upload here.

Also the alternator is 8 months old car sat for about 5 of those 8 months

Are you sure you have the right starter? Automatics use different starters than manuals due to the differences between flywheel and torque converter.

Other thing is, unfortunately, I have gone through 4 starters from auto zone and oreilly until I got one that worked. These “remanufactured” starters suck.

Tbh I’m not sure, I told the guy it was a manual. Tomorrow I’m going to pull the starter off and take it back. Yea I was thinking maybe the gave me a bad refurbished one.. I hope tomorrow I can get this problem fixed. How can I tell the difference between a auto and manual starter

Definitely sounds like a bad starter. I've seen my fair share. I recommend returning it and getting one from NAPA. Autozone electronics are the worst of the worst. Im a technician and we don't even use Autozone parts at my shop anymore because of the multitude of come-backs we get when we use Autozone parts. NAPA seems to be the only place that can offer a decent ignition coil, MAF sensor, crank sensor, etc. Oreilly's, Pepboys, and Autozone are junk and either don't work or fail within a year. I see it constantly.

The only other thing to check when you pull the starter out is the teeth on the ring gear of the flywheel. Use a mirror and flashlight if you need. Make sure there are teeth there for the starter to engage to. But that's very rare and the starter is going to be your issue.

Okay that’s sounds good and comforting. Im going to return the starter and get one from Napa then. It’s driving me crazy LOL got all excited once I put the new starter and battery I’m only to get a grinding noise and a slow one at that.

Also, don’t assume that the battery is at 100% just because it’s new.

Top off the charge to make sure your new starter cranks at full speed.

Your Chinese and Mexican alternators all come from the same factories. I'm not saying his starter is good, but I get just as many defective Napa parts as any other brand. They are made in the same factory as every other manufactured starter or alternator

I edited and toned down my response

Went out there right now, took the starter out, teeth look a little beat up on it somewhat nothing too bad, connections seemed to be in the right spot. I wired brushed where they went. Was inspecting the car and it seems the firing order on the plug wires where messed up. Whoever touched them last seems like the just out the shortest one in front and longest in the back ( firing order went 4-3, 3-2, 2-1, and 1-4) so I put them in place according to the diagram I found. Haven’t tested it yet because I already have the starter out so I’m just going to go to auto and possible just swap for a new one and then install everything again and pray it works.. would the wrong firing order cause this?

Would it be the fly wheel or starter plate though? Because it use to work good just sometimes the starter would kick in and sometimes you had to smack it to work and/or play with the key on and off til it started. That’s the main reason I replaced the starter because it was on its last legs pretty much. Never touched the trans, starter plate, or fly wheel in the process.
That’s not what the link was for it just was to show you the difference between a 5 speed starter and automatic starter.

I actually think that helped, I was looking at one thing you posted and it said pretty much 96 and under starters are 1.2kw and 97 and up are 1.4kw

I think I got a 1.2 according to starter description on the Autozone site

But all their starters say it

You're full of sh** by the way. Your Chinese and Mexican alternators and starters all come from the same factory as the oreillys brand, AutoZone and advanced and Napa. Napa parts are made in China like every other part at the store, but good job being a tech and only knowing what the Napa rep tells you. I'm sure those customers cars you fixed broke only because they didn't use Napa parts

So please keep spewing nonsense and read the box on your Mexican starters from Napa. I'm not saying his starter is good, but I get just as many defective Napa parts as any other brand. They are made in the same factory as every other manufactured starter or alternator

Did you know that regardless what the country of manufacture is, parts can be made to better specifications? There are good parts made in China depending on how it's contracted. I am speaking from experience and have never had to listen to a napa rep to know what works and doesn't work. Autozone sells garbage, everyone knows that except you apparently. You have nothing but negativity in all of your responses all over this forum. Mommy never taught you the golden rule, normal for Texans. If you disagree with something, say in a decent human manner.

Op, don't listen to me, I'm an ASE master tech diagnosing and repairing multitudes of all makes/models daily. I deal with parts from all the providers, but have no clue what I'm talking about.

Got it fixed, returned the starter and got a different one and it works now. Now the car is bogging and I can get past 35mph can be a boost leak, spark plugs or wires I know. I think maybe it’s the spark plugs because like I previously said the previous owner drove it down to me from an hour away fine and I changed the spark plugs so maybe they aren’t gapped right or my car doesn’t like the iridium plugs

Lol what do you think I do all day for a living newbie.

You specifically said you deal only with Napa, like they run a special on the line in Chihuahua Mexico and say stop the presses this is a Napa alternator. They are all re stickered Remy or power select brands.

There's literally no difference in their product line compared to competitors.

If there is a Napa next to your house, by all means use them. If you're telling some one to drive an hour out of their way to specifically get a Napa brand part because it is some how different than other auto parts stores I'm going to call you out on it.

Sound fair?

I did jump on you a bit but I've been screwed by Napa's warranty policies more than any other retailer.
