canada,
All "my car won't start" discussion threads are merged HERE. We've basically made it easier for those who insist upon not searching by grouping together all threads from those with similar issues so you can just scroll through and see some possible solutions. To search for info within this thread, use the "Search This Thread" feature in the black bar about 3" above what you're reading right now.

Could be anything from a loose battery terminal to internal engine damage, and literally everything in between which may involve the electrical, fuel, and ignition system...possibly even something that you screwed up while working on the car yourself. While it's unlikely we're going to diagnose and solve your problem over the internet, feel free to discuss any possible solutions.

I live in Canada and right now its not very warm out, about -30c
my car does not have a block heater too keep it warm.

I tryed to start my car this morning and it wouldent start, ive had this problem before but this time, the car doesnt crank at all it just makes a sound that sounds like an electric drill.

Whats wrong.

Thanks

If you need any other stuff from alldata or if you need to know how to test anything specifically let me know I can pull any of it and get it to you.

Okay thank you i really appreciate that.

Jessij do you happen to have the wiring diagram from the coil back to the battery? what wires they are? and what other stuff it goes through before it gets to the battery?

So I have hardwired the starter and everything turns over fine. I am assuming that it is down to the connections where the aftermarket alarm was present (I already took it out while doing the rewire, as the short traced back to it), I guess I must have missed something. It appears it was only wired into the column harness, so I am thinking if I simply replace the column harness it should solve my problem (I hope) - what do you think to that? Sorry, mechanical stuff I am fine with but I am a real newbie with electrics. Thanks again for your help.

** turns over and runs.

Thank you, well im taking it to a mitsubishi guy for the wiring issue cause i cant figure it out. apparently there known for breaking wires he said. i am thankful for all the help everyone. i want it running again cause i love my eclipse it might not be the fastest thing on the road but she is fun to drive.

no i havent actually, but that wouldnt cause the car to have no spark would it? my whole problem is i have no spark. everything else is fine on it just have no spark and dont understand why. i have replace everything i can think of that has to do with getting spark. ignition switch, coil pack, cam sensor, crank sensor, computer, spark plugs, plug wires, ASD relay along with the other relay next to it. the car cranks and cranks strong. we have narrowed it down to a wiring issue cause im not getting the right voltages to things. Ill check the timing belt though cause i got the car for a steal... payed 300 bucks for it cause they thought it had a blown tranny all it had was a blown clutch i mean the thing was just shavings in the tranny housing.

Okay... So, I'm still having the starting issues. Everytime I think I solve the issue and get it started, I take it out for a drive. Upon attempting to start it again after I park it, It wont start. It wont crank, and I dont hear the fuel pump. This last time I got her to fire up and start (today). I went on a trip around the block a few times and then parked in the driveway. Roughly 20 minutes later, I went to start her back up and nothing. It wouldnt turn over, and I didnt hear the fuel pump. So I took the radio/headunit out and tried and got nothing. Then I put the headunit back on and it started up just fine. I let it run for about 1 minute and then proceeded to take the headunit/radio off and try to start it immediately after, and it wouldnt. I am really confused as to why this would even have anything to do with it starting. I tried removing the radio fuse underneath the hood and it didnt help at all. I guess I will pull the center console out and take a greater look. Maybe previous owner didnt install it correctly and tied it in with another power source (highly doubt it) Does this sound like a coincidence?
*When I pulled the radio fuse the radio didnt power on*

-Extra Info-
Also when I went to go have the fuel lines/brake lines replaced at the shop (had it towed there) they got it to start and moved it prior to me getting there. When I went to pick it up, it wouldnt start. When trying to get it to start they blew the engine fuseble link (30amp) then they put in another and blew it, the then replaced it with a 60amp and it stopped it from blowing. I cant remember how they got it to start but they did. I drove it home no problems and parked it. When it starts it has no signs of anything wrong. It accelerates fine, shifts fine, no spuddering, rpms are constant at idle, lights function normal, and everything operates as it should.

Before they blew the 30amp Engine Fuseable link at the shop, I was blowing the 30amp Ignition Switch fuseable link. However, I havent blown either lately.

*The 60amp is still left in Engine Fuseable link*
-Will run to autozone and go replace it with a 30amp as it should be tomorrow-

Things I have replaced/upgraded since I have had the starting issue;
Starter (Advance Auto/ Worldwide Starter/ Remanufactured)
Battery (Group 26 Walmart/ Everstart)
All relays on firewall (ASD/MFI/Fuel Pump/ETC) *Automotive relays from radioshack*
Rewired both Positive/Negative wires from battery to starter
Replaced fuel pump with Walbro 190 (didnt rewire)
New fuses/ fuseable links

Things I have replaced/upgraded in general;
Header (ebay)
2.5" catback (ebay)
CAI (ebay)
Spark plugs (NGK)
O2 Sensor (NTK)
Many more just cant think at the moment.

Previous owner also had head work done. I can't remember what she said it was for. All I know is it came from a Neon and that the coolant light that is on is a dummy light.

Are there any common/notorious faulty wiring/short areas that I should check?

Plan of Action:
I will check/test to make sure the starter is getting 12v as it should
I will check the alternator/alternator plug/wires in that area
I will check the radio out just to make sure
Lastly, Ill dive into what Infamous has stated.

I have a salvage inspection that I have been putting off way too long on Thursday and I need this car to be there.

lastly, I will also take pictures and videos to help tomorrow morning for added information.

Hi tuners,

I had my car parked for about a year and putting it back together after I had a bit of an accident. After it was all together it started right up but the brake lines for the rear blew so I redid those.

After I was done I charged the battery and tried to fire it up, but it wouldn't start. The car was turning over but just not starting. I assumed it was the fuel pump and I had a 255lph pump lying around so I put it in, but still it wouldn't start.

Other things I've tried: friend's CAS (spun it while it was in the on position and it was sparking and spraying fuel), 2 different ECUs, unplugging the ECT sensor, cleaning the plugs and such..

Could it be the fuel in the tank went bad? And the reason it ran for a while is because the fuel in the lines was fine?

Maybe compression? But why would it suddenly lose compression when it ran fine for a couple of minutes?

Thanks for reading. :)

My money is on the bad fuel, I would drain the gas tank and put a bit of race gas in it and try to get the car to start with, starting fluid or a spoon full of gas at a time in the intake until you start getting fresh fuel. As well relieve the pressure on the fuel rail, this will empty out the gas at the fuel rail. NO SMOKING WHILE DOING THIS.

I was going to drain the gas by running a line from the fuel return line on the fuel rail into a jerrycan while turning it over until the tank is empty. Also doing a compression test, I'll let you know how it goes so I can get this thread resolved.

I bought a car that had been sitting for about a year and it ran great before I bought it. A few miles down the road one of the cylinders stopped firing. Turned out the tank had rusted out and clogged the fuel injectors.

Coil pack connectors plugged in? MPI fuse still good? There is a jumper lead behind the battery on the firewall you can use to engage the fuel pump. I'd use that instead of turning over the motor until it's drained, that's kinda hard on the starter.

Are the batter terminals corroded? That may be enough to not get started.

HTH

just bought a 99 eclipse gs yesterday and it was working fine. now today i went to go start it and it did absolutely nothing. i turn the key and nothing happened no sound nothing.. is that the battery?.... now the hatch problem is that i pull the trunk release it pops but it doesnt come up i go to pull the hatch up but it feels like its still lockd i try putting the key in but it doesnt turn.. i dont know what to do and i think becuz the hatch doesnt open or close it drained the battery does any1 know a way to get the hatch open??

Your lock cylinder is shot and so are the struts for the hatch. It happens on mine too. You have to pull the release and have someone else open it while you hold the release. Then you can replace the struts.

Problem 1 : Id definately say its the battery. Jump it drive to Autozone with tools. pull it have them test it and buy another one.

Problem 2: Very common problem with 2g. Mine does the same thing but you have to wiggle the key back and forth and eventually itll turn. I dont think thats why your battery is dead though.somebody correct me if im wrong. and if you cant afford the struts like me i use the privacy cover to hold up the hatch when i need to go back there. i flip it up and let the glass rest on it.

Not likely. There's nothing electrical (lights or sounds) that would be triggered by the hatch.

It could just be an old battery. But look for anything attached to the battery that is aftermarket. I'd start there.

he did have an amp and subs took them out when i was there so the cables are there and i remember he made the neg and positive touch and they smoked and nothing else happened.. i drove it home and it was good.. went to bed.. in the morning i started it moved it but it was weird start i thought nothing of it ### its cold figured it just needed to warm up... after i moved it about 2hrs later it does start.. theres a battery gauge and it flickers between 5 and 15.. but the engine makes no noise

Hold on, you said you turn the key but nothing happens. Do any lights or radio come on? I'm just making sure that the battery is definitely dead.
