canada,
All "my car won't start" discussion threads are merged HERE. We've basically made it easier for those who insist upon not searching by grouping together all threads from those with similar issues so you can just scroll through and see some possible solutions. To search for info within this thread, use the "Search This Thread" feature in the black bar about 3" above what you're reading right now.

Could be anything from a loose battery terminal to internal engine damage, and literally everything in between which may involve the electrical, fuel, and ignition system...possibly even something that you screwed up while working on the car yourself. While it's unlikely we're going to diagnose and solve your problem over the internet, feel free to discuss any possible solutions.

I live in Canada and right now its not very warm out, about -30c
my car does not have a block heater too keep it warm.

I tryed to start my car this morning and it wouldent start, ive had this problem before but this time, the car doesnt crank at all it just makes a sound that sounds like an electric drill.

Whats wrong.

So I went to the store and came back and the car won't start nor crank. I tried getting a jump, still didn't work. The only way I was able to getting it going was to push start it. I replaced the battery, the terminals, took the starter to autozone to get it tested and it was good. The car is getting power: the lights, radio, etc. Cleaned the starter and reinstalled it. Nothing. Any help/advise/suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you have the starter itself tested? The solenoid good have gone bad. Def check your grounds and your main power wire to the starter for good connection. Make sure the main fuses aren't blown, if I remember right the ignition fuse if blown would not allow the starter to function. That's where I would start.

buy a test light and start at the starter . put the test light on the negative side of the battery and while someone turns the key to the start position probe the small starter terminal and see if the test light lights up the larger one should always be hot. if it doesn't then you have to follow the circuit back to maybe a relay , ignition switch , wiring or even a computer .you can also try swapping the starter relay with another one. they should all be the same

If it's not turning over (won't crank), try unplugging the clutch switch under the dash. Sometimes they go bad and won't let you start by cranking it.

Start from the starter out. Try manually jumping the starter. If that works, go out to relays, if good, go to ignition switch. Idk if it'll work here, but you can try banging on the starter with a wrench or something.

So i was wondering, if anyone could help me diagnose this issue i'm having with my car.

So when i go to start my car, all it does is crank over. it doesn't start and idle.
What could be causing this? could my coil pack be bad? I have fuel. but unsure about spark. I checked spark. and i only seen spark on cylinder 2 and 3 not on 1 and 4.

Could it be the coil pack causing my car not to crank over like it should?

If you only have spark on cylinder 2 and 3 there is a good chance the coil pack is the culprit. I would start there.

I rechecked spark, and there is spark in all cylinders. I took my battery down to autozone, and I found out I had a bad battery. Got it replaced. And still does the same thing. Except it's cranking faster than it was on the bad battery.

Does your tach move when you try starting it? Does your CEL come on when you turn the key to the on position? Check the compression also.

Yes I hear the fuel pump. I just rebuilt the motor. Due to me snapping a connecting rod. The fuel pump does kick on. And compression is reading around 170 on each cylinder.

Has this motor been recently running after rebuild or is this the first starting? What indication do you have that the cylinder is receiving gas? Note: The sound of a fuel pump doesnt automatically mean the cylinder has fuel. Crank it a few times, pull a plug see if there's gas on it, if so your missing spark or is weak.

Are you getting fuel to the rail? You said you just recently did a rebuild, did you double check timing?

Are you getting fuel to the rail? You said you just did a rebuild did you double check timing?

I checked timing on it atleast 10 times minimum. The plugs smell like gas. This would be the first start up after rebuild.

You've verified compression and fuel, so the only thing left is spark. Pull a spark plug wire, place a spark plug into the boot, and lay it on the valve cover. Crank the engine over and watch for spark.

So my car overheated a few weeks back i stopped using it for about 2 weeks, tried firing it up, nothing you can just hear the starter ts ts ts ts i replaced the battery, checked my wiring, replaced spark plugs, tested my alternator, and it still wouldn't start, so I did a compression test got 130,145,150,130 and i know my headgasket is done but the engine flooded so badly gasoline started coming out of my bov and started flooding out of my turbo i turned the key to off and was in disbelief, so i was so pissed i just put everything back and now I'm trying to get rid of it but i want to keep it but i need a car for work if they're is someway someone can identify my problem it would save a beautiful car from being junked

give me a call at 347-885-9382 0r respond here asap please!
