SSAutochrome O2 housing. Here we go!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the flange and the tubing were two different materials, then wouldn't they crack no matter what due to the fact that once they both heat up they expand and contract at different temperatures and the amount that they contract differs? Maybe it doesn't matter between stainless steel to mild or whatever the flange is made out of, but that's what I thought.

For the price, this 02 housing "looks" to good be true ya know. If this piece holds together for you, I am considering buying it and modifying the wastegate and mounting a SS 38mm flange to it and vuooalla.

Can you please measure the inlet and outlet of the 02 housing, where it meets the turbine exit and where it bolts to the downpipe. Their auction claims "3" DIAMETER" but it looks more like 2.5".

I'd appreciate it!
Thanks,
Andrew

Hey yall, this was just a quick chop of what I was thinking on mounting the wastegate. SS 35mm flanges can be had for $14.00 each at RRE. I'm not sure about clearance, but I don't believe there should be a problem being that its facing away from the oil-filter housing, and most of us have to change to slim fans anyways when mounting the gate here. Let me know what yall think.

Ah if it does I'm out a whopping 70 smackers. If not then I just saved myself about 200 bucks :) Not a big deal and definitely worth trying. Hell at that price I could just buy SS flanges myself and make it work and STILL be ahead of the game!

As for the Toyota key.... I bought a '93 Geo Prizm (aka '93 Toyota Corolla) for a winter car. Wouldn't want to get that AWD salty now would I?

If it turns out to work good for you, I may buy one for myself, your looks alot better than the one shown on ebay! Sure :thumb: would beat paying 200+ for a tubular O2 housing

hey that manifold wouldnt happen to be the manifold that was sitting up at hp motorsports for a long time a couple months ago would it?

For the SR? My lil brother let Tony take a look at it for a bit (up at HP) and then decided to have Mike at Sublime make him a custom manifold and downpipe. Please don't whore this thread up with off-topic stuff that could easily have been PM'd to me.

You can't port pipe. THe porting they refer to is actually removing all of the slag from the shitty welds. The neck on that recirc'd housing screams boost creep...nice entrance angle.

calling me the whore.

yeah i heard that they had a bad design for the sr's
I looked at that one and the welds looked pretty sloppy
i bought one of someone on the internet for my t3 dsm. I compared the 2 and it looked like it was done by a whole different company.

OK, how many of these pieces of shit have been sold? My guess is that they would make the first few sold halfway decent so people would start threads on forums saying that they are an OK quality.

Maybe something good will come from ssautochrome after all... we'll see.

Come on... don't we know better by now? I don't buy it.

Save your pennies kids and support American-made high-quality products.

Well most if not all of these parts are made in china or taiwan (usually) in MASS quantity so I can pretty much guarantee that the first piece is gonna be as good as the last. As for how well it'll work that remains to be seen.

Oh, and on to the bad news... My car is getting stored for about a year while I'm off to tech school... :( Guess it'll be awhile before I test her out :(

u shoulda started this thread when you were installing it..... tell us in a year how it is...

ill buy it off you for 40 shipped and have it installed the day after i get it with pix...

or someone else can stop being so cheap and spend the 80$ and get 1 off ebay. People are like voulchers around here to make ridiculous offers.

There's a weld on the dump tube that meets the downpipe flange that needs to be cut. ;) Then afterwards, you'd probably want to support the WG since I wouldn't trust that weld on the WG pipe on the turbine side flange. :thumb:

Yup that tack weld would be cut on the dumptube, and a support brace would be a good idea on the safe side.

Do a paper trace and make sure the 3" side is not too big for your turbine side. My 2.5" is about 2mm away from the wastegate outlet on my gt12 though I did port the wategate outlet a little. Double check yours before you bolt it on, 3" might be pretty close. I'm very interested in how this turns out for you, I too almost bought one but went with a 144 performance instead due to SS reputation. I must said it does look pretty good, I thought the picture on ebay would be the best one they ever made. good luck with it.

Sounds good, you want me to throw in my 50trim too, it's just takin' up space here :thumb:

EDIT>>> Did a little research on some other O2 housings and this is what I found.

As far as the design of the SS housing goes it's VERY similar to the Victory Performance piece... I'd go as far to say that attempted to copy it for the most part.

Here is a picture of the Victory pieces.

Now if you look closely at the similar O2 housing you'll see that the angle of entry for the wastegate exhaust flow is VERY similar to the SS piece, it's maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe a hair lower than the SS piece, but nearly identical.

Now I know they're not identical but VERY very similar.

So the thing that really began to annoy me was that they used mild-steel flanges. Granted it's not the end of the world, but this was still advertised as a SS product. I began to wonder if mild steel flanges would hold up with SS tubing...

So I looked at some more O2 housings and came across one of my old favorites. The MachV O2 housing.

Now this particular piece has a much smoother wastegate exhaust entry, but those flanges.....

They have SS tubing with mild-steel flanges as well OMG

Now they also make a full stainless piece for 300, but apparently they feel the stainless/mild steel combo works well enough together to charge 289 for it :D Just some more food for thought :thumb:

Will this fit on a t25

Never...

Just kidding, this "should" fit any mitsubish turbo, or turbine housing ie: 13b, 14b, t25, t28, 16g, 18g, 20g.

Good find Surgeon. I was unaware that other big DSM vendors actually made tubular O2 housings with mild steel and SS tubing. I wish someone would get this piece bolted on so we can see if it will withstand temps of 1600+ :D .
