Hey so i was looking at STM web page and i seen this and i would like to install it on my dsm, It says it "basic" well what do they mean by that as of right now i have a 2g head with a 6 bolt bottom "short block" and i don't know what opinion to pick from if i buy this . the other thing i want to know is will it just bolt up it says you need to solder two wires but is that it do i need any kind of supporting mods for this or no ? can some one shed some light ?

This is the link. STM: SPARK TECH COIL-ON-PLUG SYSTEMS | BASIC PLUG & PLAY UNIT | 90-99 DSM :banghead:

Any one ?? Want to help ?

What kind of supporting mods were you thinking? A Coil-On-Plug system replaces most of your ignition system (plug wires, coil packs, etc). I'm actually looking at buying the same exact setup for my car. The only thing you should have to do is just solder those two wires to your factory plug. Everything else is bolt-on. Might as well change your plugs while you're at it.

Never have to replace plug wires again either. And besides, if you have to replace a coil pack for the stock ignition system you're already up to 150 bucks.

That's only if you're buying brand new coil packs. And how often do you honestly have to replace your spark plug wires? I've had my car for 5+ years and I'm on my 2nd pair of wires.

It's been mentioned more than a few times in here that a COP setup is only a worthwhile mod if you couple the install with an aftermarket CDI (Dynatek, MSD DIS, etc.).

Worthless without a CDI. Otherwise you're bound to two situations: 1. run parallel and overload the power transistor with current, or 2. run in series, halving the voltage to each coil, and have a weak spark and most likely have running problems. It's also pointless as long as you stay on a batch-fire system. The only real point of 4 coils is when you get into sequential ignition and, unrelated but still related, injection.

Not a stupid post. This site is here to give you information. You even got all these responses without someone being an ass! That's rare.

...And in which case without a CDI it still won't perform as well as a stock coil...

Well... a new non-CDI COP can out-perform worn out stock coils; at least mine does. In fact, it out-performs all 5 sets of old stock coils that I've swapped in and out. LOL

My COP actually works better without my DIS II... but I'm pretty sure that is the DIS II's fault.

(I'd still go with a new stock ignition over a COP setup if I had to pay retail for both).

Most of these problems with CDI is the stock ECU and dwell. I don't see a point for COP or CDI until you get a standalone. A bad stock coil is absolutely hell :)

If you ever want to do COP setup I would suggest going with Bushur racing's setup. I've read up a lil bit on them and it seems a better setup than Spark Tech's. And I haven't read about anyone needing to use an ignition amplifier with them yet nor do they recommend any. But again unless your pushing at least 350+ I don't see very much gain out of them besides the style. Though i have considered it just for the looks as well. LOL

Both stock and COP setups have there advantages and disadvantages. I ran a COP setup on stock ignition system and got rid of it quick, performance decreased a bit more than i was comfortable with. Some just prefer looks over performance, me...id rather go fast, noones looking under my hood while im movin, cant please everyone.

BTW, 4 years still on same plug wires and no issues. Accel thundersports FTW!
