okay, ive done some reading on the site. my car has been running great! untill today...my luck on my way to my grad party i was cruising at 35mph not rodding at all. heard a ticking noise pulled over it was coming from my t-belt/pully area. checked it and proceeded down the road and it gets a little louder and i pull into the nearest parking lot and it shut off. now it wont start. there are now frays on my timing belt...werent there untill today after the ticking started. i got a car wash today(did it at a do it yourself car wash) it ran fine there and back. stopped home picked up a few things and went on my way to my graduation party and thats when the ticking started than shut off. any help?

If I were to guess your crank trigger plate was hitting your crank position sensor and it took it out. Problem is why did it happen. I would check crank play if this turns out to be what happened.

okay, what all should i remove to check for that? and maybe a rough estamate price to fix?

for parts

Yup, u nailed it. Crank sensor plate. Or the sensor itself somehow came loose and started chewing sh!t up. That is odd though and would have me checking the lateral play in the crank as well.

If the plate moved enough to hit the sensor, your crank's play might have been the cause. In order to move that much under normal specifications that would mean your crank's thrust bearing is worn way beyond specification, which is why I suggested you check this first. If crank play is not the issue but still the trigger plate took out the sensor, you might have had a freak occurrence with the plate being deformed on install and maybe was just very close to the sensor and finally it hit and damaged it. I suspect this is what happened on my track car and was told by Marco@Magnus that can happen.

So check the cps first. You'll have to search for how to test it but basically you connect a multimeter across some pins and rotate the engine by hand to make sure the outputs cycle correctly. If the cps isn't outputting properly then you'll have to remove the cps which means all the pulleys and lower timing cover have to come off to get to it.

If the cps checks out then post and perhaps folks will have more ideas for you.

Ive changed a CPS just by removing the belt cover and accessing it through the wheel well. You'll see real quick when you get the pulley off if the trigger plate is bent. I fixed mine in about 3hrs iirc, it was a long time ago though.

okay taking my cover off now be back with info and pics thanks for the help guys!

okay now im getting scared...its still on there, how does it look??

Its mangled. How is the trigger plate? i assume its bent to hell. Replace both but do as TSIAWD suggested and check endplay to make sure your not Cr***walking. I wont even type it cause its way to early to say something like that. However you should make sure before you chalk it up to freak occurance and bolt replacement parts in just to have them break on ya.
Weird stuff happens on dsms. Theyre down more than theyre up LOL. I wouldnt be too afraid just yet.

The part where youre seeing copper colored metal should be encased in plastic like the rest. Theres a hole in the center on the inside. Hall effect? Or is it opto-coupled. I cant remember but same difference, does the same job. Just different ways

so which one is the trigger plate? would this cause my car to not start? i just ordered a new crank position sensor. for checking endplay do i need the harmonic balancer off, than use a prybar on the crank?

The trigger plate is the plate that rotates through the body of that sensor. It should be obvious what it is. It's attached to the crank. Looks like this:

You should search for how to check for end play, but the basics is you will want a dial indicator attached to a magnetic base that you can place on the oil pan. You would use a pry bar, easiest from the top using the frame rail on the crankshaft bolt, and push the crank towards the passenger side. Then you move the dial indicator so it measures in line with the crankshaft and the probe touching the crankshaft bolt, and zero it out there. Then just get in your car and push your clutch pedal all the way in. I want to say the service limit is like .0095"? I forget, it's been a long while since I looked at this, so you should double check.

Yes, this will keep your car from running because that signal is used for timing ignition/fuel, and so without it those aren't activated.

What clutch do you have installed? and what Oil and weight do you use?

T6 5/40? Great shit. Thats what i use in my dsm and zx10r. Cant beat it for the price/quality.
