Simple intake heat shield

Reduced IAT about 30*F...at least until it heat soaks after half an hour. Then only about 11*F above ambient while moving..its aluminum. Just drops into place. It's unfinished I still need to close up a spot or two and insulate it some how for full benefit.

Draws air mostly from fender well and behind head light. I have considered adding a good vent that duct right into it but... not yet.

What gauge aluminum and how big was the piece you started with? (12" x 12")?

I think it was 16 gauge. Not sure what the sizes were, It's 2 main pieces, I just measured what I needed.. If I get around to it today and remember I'll take a few measurements and post them.

That had occured to me, and I have some but I think it's only 2" wide tape which wouldn't look as good having a bunch of strips all over it . Besides I'm not sure how much that would actually help. I'm thinking about trying to find something a little thicker and lining the inside with it...BUT I may use reflective tape since it's already purcahsed and see if it makes any difference. The front lower portion still needs to be closed up. I'm thinking about trying to make a track on the sides and have a piece that can side up from the bottom around the intake to seal it completely, just either have a pin hold it in place or a spring for quick and easy install/removal.

I also need to do something about that coolant over flow bottle . I made one out of aluminum but the tubing may be to small..

The tape definitely helps. I have it on the underside of my hood and after a drive you can trace the area its on just by the difference in temperature.

Well, took the little bit of 1.5" I had left, almost covered it all. I haven't taken it for a drive since, I'll update once
I do.

As you can see there's still a large gap it doesn't cover, but it's towards the front... Still I will seal it, but I think it will probably be with a piece that bolts into place to make it able to be sealed, but removable fairly easily.

UPDATE:

Heat reflective tape prolonged the amount of time it took to heat soak, but still does. At which point the difference between ambient and IAT is the same. 11* above ambient pop-ups down, 9* with them up. I'll see if I can find time to finish sealing it up this week, I expect that to make a bigger difference. Even then I'm not going to keep this one on the car, I already see mistakes made, I'll make another using what I learn from this one. This was initially just a real quick (like made in an hour) sort of thing with a lot of quick tape and eyeball measuring just to see the effect on IAT.

Couldn't you insulate it or use something other than metal.

Well originally I wanted to do this out of plastic... but I'm a welder and scrap is free

Just shoving a piece of cardboard in that 1 opening lowered IAT this morning to just 6* above ambient after 30min drive to work.
