i will start off by saying this is my first turbo car, first 4 cylinder besides my old 2002 ranger, and first fwd besides the grand caravan.. neither of which ever got worked on LOL

so needing some help on what to do, just picked up a bone stock 1990 laser turbo still even has factory cassette player and everything.. does have a k&n fiter but with factory metal air box

so put the boost gauge on and worked fine and floored it and heard a loud pop and it idles at like 400 or 500 rpm and if i floor it itll take about 7 seconds to finally get about 1200 then itll be fine

so took the heat shield and stuff off and my exhaust manifold was cracked...

so now i need a new manifold.
what to look for?

do i go ebay with t3/t4?
bigger mitsu turbo? boost the crap outta the 14 ?

its all taken apart now, should i go to fmic?
looked at it and with a/c and oil cooler i dont see where itll fit

and hard piping, have the huge metal air box. any kits to change over leave it alone or what?

For a quick fix just get a 2nd gen DSM exhaust manifold they aren't as prone to cracking.

As for the air box you can take that off but you need to leave the MAF sensor.

I'd stay with the stock 14b turbo for now. Don't turn up the boost til you get a logger, don't go higher than 15 PSI until you get a rewired larger fuel pump and larger injectors as well as a tuning solution.

For a FMIC CX Racing, Punishment Racing, and VRSF work great, but all require cutting the bumper support (crash beam). VRSF has more potential but requires modification and cutting where as the Punishment Racing just requires you to take off the AC fan and lose the fog lights. The more expensive ETS front mount will keep the fogs, requires no modification to the bumper support and is by far the best of all the "cheapish" kits.

You are going to want to upgrade your radiator and get some slim fans if you don't want to overheat in traffic. I've heard the Punishment Racing aluminum radiator with mishimoto fans works great. Although a Mishimoto radiator is reported to work better.

but this car is just a project i dont have to drive it maybe for another month or so

kinda wanted to see where to move up from here

turbo? aftermarket anything? intercooler?

if not ive got a buddy who has a 2nd gen he offerd to me 50$ but if im going to do it, ill do it as much as i can now

Do a boost leak test since you heard a loud "pop", as Gusu said, a 2g manifold will be an upgrade to the 1g you are using. Don't worry about upgrading the turbo now or for a while until you have all the proper supporting mods.

The manifold is also going to depend on what turbo you PLAN on running. If a DSM flange, then go with a FP Race manifold if you want to stay with a cast.

what supporting mods?

i dont mind just letting this thing sit here until i buy it all LOL

Look at the upgrade path, that's why it's here and why you should also utilize the forum and read up about the car before making new threads that you can easily find the info for.

Don't forget to start with the basics and make sure it is even running right first. Just put on a 16g myself and felt like I lost power until I replaced every seal and gasket on my intake tract, I was probly leaking half of my boost!

A ported 2g manifold is fine. I wouldn't consider going to an FP-Race manifold unless you are running a 20g or a Holset in a bolt-on housing. Plenty of people have maxed a 16g on a 2g manifold. You can easily max the 14b on the 2g manifold and it less prone to cracking than the 1g manifold.

thanks guys

im getting a 3" downpipe today
maf translator kit
and just ordered fmic kit
and 2g manifold

and putting it all back together today

might start removing some of these vacuum lines also that i dont need, just need to find the thread about it

Did you do the fuel pump rewire. That helps a bit with the stock setup.

But really, you need to figure out what turbo you want to run ( or how big of an hp#) and then build your setup on paper before you just start buying parts and throwing them on.

If you run dsmlink v3 with the gm maf cable, you don't need the maft anymore, etc.

The crack in the exhaust manifold is COMPLETELY unrelated to the loud pop you heard.

Check all the clamps and hoses for the intercooler system. You either popped one loose, or blew a hole in one.

Do a boost leak test, this should help you locate the problem.

Checked them all first thing I did cause my friends 2j car had that problem when.he did hard piping twice and it was all tight but they might be broke or cracked.
I'm getting a fmic Tuesday so ill know for sure.then when I finish takinging smic off

On phone didn't see all new post, but haven't done anything with fuel pump
And.thanks for the vacuum line thread ill pull up when I get home

havent decided on turbo, want to work around everything then finish turbo later

but goal is 330hp for now

if you try and for a few bucks you can get that car running pretty quick with good maintenance and this site with no add on parts except for that cracked mani.. goodluck.

im doing

maft
fmic
stock turbo
full exhaust
2g manifold

and get it running how i like and go from there
