A side-exit at a track that checks sound often puts you in a 50/50 coin-flip as to whether you'll get a black flag (depending on whether they put the sound station on the left or the right). A turn-down is usually quieter in all directions, although it's often much louder inside the car.

Just for the 2G guys looking at this thread, Team MotoCrew has done it before with a 1997 GSX:

What would possess someone to bring the exhaust into the interior and then send it out the side? Are we really seeing what you suggest?

I will assume you're responding to the post I made. I couldn't tell you how they did it. I couldn't find any interior photos of that particular GSX. I have tried to contact them in the past, but have had no success.

If they did go through part of the rear passenger area, I imagine they fabricated some sort of heat shield to ward off any unnecessary or perhaps dangerous heat/fumes.

There is a picture of that black gsx in Modified mag of june 2005 (gold celica widebody with fmic on cover) on the last page under the random pictures of crazy/nice/different cars sent by readers. That picture shows that it's got a serious cage, seats, big brakes, gram lights, carbon hood and hatch, single wiper, tow hook and the wing so i would say it is pretty much a track slut :)

yep... and extremely loud in the car with a straight pipe!

I noticed greg runs a turndown and some others run an actual side exit under the side cladding. Any reasons behind your particular decisions?

Kyle, also, if you go Greg's rout, and do a turn down, you can probably keep it under the car more, and gain some ground clearance. Mine does drag every once in a while.

:)

I've thought about doing a 2.5" to 3" adapter and then ovaling out the 3" and making a fanned outlet to keep the actual side outlet fairly skinny. Hard for me to explain but it's all in my head correctly :D

I think I know what your saying. Your going to spread it out (elongate it) like a nascar exhaust. That's a good idea, Kyle.

:)

Damn, that stuff gets pricey in a hurry. Think I'll just stick with the 2.5" to smashed and fanned 3". Much more time consuming, but it's time I've got. Not money.

I added one to the gallery but it wont show right away.

It comes right out the front fender on the passenger side. I took an evo 3 turbo and flipped it around.

Heres a picture from my sig it gives you an Idea

Yea, I took some time and drew this guy up after seeing the pricing on that oval tubing

I should've mentioned that I need this to exit post b-pillar for it to be legal for scca and Nasa requirements. That's why I put it in the road racing forum, you drag racing guys get it too easy :D

Kyle -

SCCA Solo2 Rule 3.3.3.B.13 says behind driver -or- to the side. I've seen turbo cars, for example, with the main exhaust going to a down-turn under the car, but behind the driver, while the wastegate dumps straight out through a front fender.

These same cars, however, don't run at tracks with sound limits, like Devens, nor do the myriad CP cars with exhausts out the side in front of the driver.

A wastegate dump that neither rejoins the main exhaust nor gets piped off to the side is illegal in Solo2. (Not that I've seen a protest against such.)

Aahh, I run internal so it doesn't matter to me much anyways :D

I used to have a side exit, my problem was speed bumps and even small potholes, that took it's toll and I had to replace it. I'm going straight back with a oval race muffler and it exits a turndown just in front of the gas tank. Long as you don't drive the car everyday and are careful you should be fine dude.

Well got her finished and welded up last night. Only took me about an hour to do, but then I ran out of wire for the last weld.

Simple side exit, haven't done the "flattening and widening" of the tip section for added ground clearance yet. I think I'm going to have to though. I used one 12" dynomax bullet muffler 2 1/2" in and out ($35 on summit racing) and it sounds ungodly mean, but right now it's also ungodly loud while cruising. Hoping that after the muffler gets some heat run through it it'll begin to do a better job of "muffling" things. I remember my old dynomax ultraflow did the same thing though so my hopes are there that I won't have to add another one inline.

I'd be curious to hear what your 90db setup consists of though Greg.

Sounds killer Kyle. I'd like to swing by this weekend and hear what it sounds like.

kyle, lets see some pics.:thumb:

Just open one of the windows and I'll drive past your edition at WOT, you'll hear it. But I'll be at home Sunday doing the ps cut elimination.

I'm going to get some as soon as possible. As usual I managed to spend way more time doing it than need be by getting sidetracked and I didn't have it painted and installed until 11pm.

After a day of driving it to work and back I'm going to look into either adding in another muffler or something to quiet it down a little bit. It sounds outrageous when on wot, but the droning at 3000rpm cruise is just ungodly.

This is what I've got now.
Dynomax bullet

Here's a list of the other dynomax mufflers available in 2.5"
Dynomax 2.5" mufflers

I'm happy to report that with both mufflers on the car runs and sounds great and it totally bearable to drive. It get's a bit noisy between 2 and 3 which sucks because that's where it spends most of its time on the street, but above 3 like when I'm on the highway it goes back to normal. The car also sounds very agressive with the side exit. Here's a video. It's not terribly loud as the exhaust exits away from the camera.

Pulling out and getting on it in 1st at marker 1:10

I'm going to have to shorten the hangers for the middle of the exhaust as it hangs awfully low right now. But here it is off of the car.
