It be easier the just to run an open exhaust meaning just the downpipe and nothing else because you don't the pay for fabrication and the cops won't be after you.

I'd recommend sending it out the passenger side though, probably a little less noisy inside the car.

The whole point of a side mount exhaust is a straight flow exhaust with as little bend as possible. Placing the side mount of the driver side would do you no good if it's a Mitsubishi or T3 housing turbo because of the 180 degree bend. It would be much better to use an open pipe with using the downpipe only.

I have mine coming out the side. You can't see the pipe though, it's too short and hangs out under the body. It's not very loud with a muffler (I made a very short one), I imagine even a resonator and a cat would work. If it's not louder than the limit, then you shouldn't have a problem, even if you have the exhaust coming out of the hood or the roof. That's the way the laws are arranged around here anyway. It's not going to get a police officers attention any more than a stainless coffee can in the back. I'll try and take a video.

I don't what you consider reasonably quiet, but without a cat it's incredibly loud even with a stock turbo. A cat restricts over 60% of the airflow, so it's 2-3 louder and even with a resonator it is still loud because it only quiets it down 15 dB. Anyways, you can't compare your side mount considering you're using a 16g and a 2.5" dump. People usually do a side mount dump when it's really worth it for the power gain on a big turbo with a 4" dump and that it seriously loud. The car idles like a 7.0l turbo diesel truck and when the car is under throttling it can be damaging to your ears.

I wanted to have the exhaust their just because thats one thing that I wanted. As for the noise its not a problem. This car is going to be a weekender(Friday and Saturday nights), and I have been running with a custom down pipe that exits out the front bumper. I was DDing the car for about 6 months. On a side note I have ran my camaro with just headers for about a year and a half(ls1).

I've had a side exhaust on my car for about 30-40k its not to loud at all and has a decent liveable tone. Highway speeds- 60-70 mph the car is "quiet" interior wise. I use a 2.5 downpipe that turns into a 3 inch no cat. The muffler sits where the cat used to be and has a 90 degree following the stock piping up to the gas tank and comes out just past the pinch welds on the frame on the passenger side. Its certainly different to do, at the shootout last year their were maybe 5-6 cars with side exhaust exhausts. If clearence is an issue being as its going on a awd then you might want to use a glasspack as there smaller in diameter then a muffler. Make sure the exhaust tip is past the pinch welds a few inches if not it will resonate agaisnt the floor and it will sound unbearable.

Check local laws or go to an inspection station and ask for rules on exhaust routing. As long as it exits past the the last door jam on the vehicle it should pass inspection. If you have visual inspection on emissions equipment you can always hollow the cat out. If they smog check the system then your kind of out of luck.

Cheaper/better idea, launch your car when you have 2 stripped bolts on the o2 housing that you're unaware of......16ft of piping to 7 inches in a split second.
However, my turbo does spool 5-800rpms sooner, it pulls harder, and smells/sounds a lot worse haha

Good times.

back when i was looking to do a sidepipe...the guy i took it to i got into an fight with, he swore his life that the fuel lines run on the driver side and would never put a sidepipe on the car...

This link should work if not let me know. Its of my side exit. Its not a close up but just look at the primer talons passenger side in front of the rear tire.

Mine is very similar to that one also, and is relatively quiet (even with interior gutted). Even under WOT, it isn't extreme loud and annoying. Many guys out there with standard 2.5 inch cat back are much louder just cruising.

Wish I had a picture handy to show, but it is pretty much identical to the one above anyway.

My car seems to resonate a little bit more with a passenger in it and the only time it gets super loud is when I'm up against a concrete highway divider, tunnel, or passing car. Doing any of those three things at W.O.T in 2nd or 3rd, then it sounds awesome. I wish i could make a sound clip of it. My cheapo muffler has seen better days since I use an AWD dp on my FWD it hangs low so its got a minor leak in it. You hear it at idle but W.O.T its a symphony of a deap raspy sound and turbo spool at 20psi.

Is a heat shield absolutely needed for a side exit? Will it melt the plastic if i just have a 3" hole? Never measured the temp of the exhaust pipes. Or egts does anyone make a side exit heat shield like gastroker and devin have? Or do i have to make one. I dont care how dead this thread is I'm doin this and need info LOL.
