side exit exhaust [Merged 1-9]

i had a 2.5" pipe bent that exits under the passenger side door. i just dropped my cat and bolted it up in its place. i have a video of it somewhere, i'll try and dig it up. you cant exactly hear the turbo at idle, but when you're decelerating you still hear it pretty good.

The local law enforcement would have a field day with this one. Must we not forget that alot of sanctioning bodies dont allow the side exhaust to exit before the front door for reasons such as carbon monoxide. Just a thought.

Ahhh, the NHRA and IHRA allow it, thats all that matters. Shep is running something similar. Only it comes out the passenger side under the headlight.

after seeing sheps new set up (intercoolerless, and well, just look at that exhaust manifold, that thing is insane) ive desided he is no longer my dsm idol. his car is just too over the top. its TOO insane. its no longer a dsm, its just a monster. it seems to me that his car has basically become a shove everything but the kitchen sink in there car. cram as much nos, air, fuel, and methonal in there and you will have a huge amount of hp with little denotation. it just seems like its too much.

well its definately not streetable anymore, but think about it. It's still a little 2.0 4cyl dsm 4G63 at heart. But the point was that the IHRA and NHRA allow the side exit exhaust in the front. It's definatly not street legal, and the SCCA and other sanctioning bodies don't approve, but most people just drag race anyways.

its not that its not impressive, its just that his car now stands for nothing i want to do in life. i dd a minivan, and taking corners with that thing is so much fun. not because its impressive, but because its dangerous. i know pumping nitrous into a 1200+ hp car is probably more dangerous, but you dont get that instantanious feeling of OH SHIT when you hear the suspension start to buckle under the cars weight. its 10 years old and this is a fun way of making it look 50 years old.

I'm sure shooting off the line and crossing the traps near 180 has its own thrills but I understand what you mean. Having a car that can run fast and carve some corners is the ideal setup. Looks like it's time to buy an EVO (ok so maybe not until they're older and you can actually afford one).

In my opinion he simply did what he had to do to take the car to the next level. He took the car pretty much as far as it could go on that setup. There is no reason to be let down because of it. Its still a 4g63 powerd all wheel drive car. As long as he stays true to the 4g63 motor, original chassis(not tube and frame) and keeps the car all wheel drive. I wont ever be disapointed.

Sorry i know this post is off topic.

anything running a 7 second quarter mile is amazing. anything with only 4 cylinders running a 7 second quarter mile is amazing. anything driving all 4 wheels running a 7 second quarter mile is amazing. my point is the car might as well be a tube chassis funny car since it might share the same block as us, but thats just about it. the drivetrain is the same if you have a shep transmission, carbon fiber driveshaft, reiforced axels, act 2900 pressure plate, whatever flywheel hes using, and every other drivetrain part shep has. I understand that i will probably never run an 8 second quarter mile ( i hope to one day make it into the 9.99999999999s, so ill never make it into the 8s, but maybe the 9s) so his car is obviously better than my car in that sense. but to me a dsm is something that rules the street, not so much the strip. you can drop a crate engine in a muscle car and run a 7 second quarter mile (ok maybe its not that easy, but the point is if you dump a lot of money into any car it will run fast), but dsm's are known for "i bought this car for a grand and put a grand into it, now its in the 11's and is faster than your benz. sheps car is more of a, this is what happens when you make a 4 cylinder engine go crazy. its over the top in my opinion. but hey, he wanted a 7 second car and he got exactly what he wanted. if thats what he wants i respect that. my car cant run a 7 second quarter mile, so i think it should be obvious that i think is work is amazing, just not practical or something i see myself doing ever.

I've been debating on making a 3'' madrel bend exhaust that goes DP, then straight until a 90 degree turn to exit out in front of the back wheel. Not sure on which side I would do it but do you guys think this would look nice?

Well i think it would be very unique, and probably pretty sweet if you could mold it into the side skirt with maybe some sheetmetal around the opening in the skirt so it doesnt turn it black/melt it (kinda like a JGTC style). But i am wondering if that a side exit exhaust is legal? i dont know why it wouldnt be but it would suck to do all the work and have to take it all off. I would think it's street legal since i see buicks with the side pipes but who knows.

I think it would be a pretty sweet little project and probably get you some street cred ROFL

good luck

Yeah, I don't care much for legality, I bairley ever drive it on the street, maybe to a car meet on the weekends. I plan on fabbing it up myself then taking it to an exhaust shop and have them weld it up. Should I put a muffler on it?

i'd go with a glasspack or something, then just a tip (no muffler for a tip that would look ugly). side pipe would be awesome, maybe even get a dual tip for looks...or run a dual setup and one on each side.

I dont know how it would look on a DSM, but my buddy a side pipe on his conquest. Straight pipe, no cat's, and no muff, sounded real mean. Cant remember what side it was routed to though.

That Would be Awesome if You Could While Your Fabbing Post Instruction on how to run it through your side skirts for us newbies LOL:thumb:
