side exit exhaust [Merged 1-9]

Well like it was already said, getting to the passenger side is going to be damn near impossible. A single driver side exit with say 2 oval tips right before the rear tire would be sex though. :thumb:

dude, a 57 chevy w/ flowmasters will sound completely different than a boosted 4banger w/ a flomaster ;)

What is ATR?

Applied Technology and Research. They are a company that kinda specializes in turbo Buick performance but make parts for many cars. Their exhaust for the DSM is widely believed to be the meanest sounding and loudest muffled exhaust you can buy.

On the left hand side of the screen you click on Mitsubishi Eclipse and then scroll down. They don't just sell mufflers, they are catbacks and downpipes. I have the full ATR exhaust on my car, O2 housing and all. It's nice. :thumb:

you could try one of these, they are superlight, the one i want it like 2.3 lbs OMG

I'd agree with this guy. Use Ultraflow, Burns Stainless, ATR, Borla or any stainless straight thru with single in single out. I've run an ATR "pit bull" 2.5" straight thru and it was pretty quiet too, don't know about 3" though. DON'T use FLOWMASTER under any conditions. I've seen benchflow tests on all of these mufflers and all of the straight thru cores flow HUGE cfm with little pressure drop. A good rule of thumb in picking mufflers is 1 in square of internal muffler pipe area = 115 cfm of flow at .75 psi pressure drop. So a 3" straight thru muffler will flow 812 cfm @ .75 psi drop, 3.5" muffler would flow 1105 cfm @ .75 psi drop.

I don't recommend that "Aeroturbine" muffler for one reason, they have NO benchflow data and they are not "exactly" straight thru. They are using big time "turbulence" to reduce noise, NOT packing material. That should tell you these things are already at a disadvantage.

Pipe routing is all aesthetics anyway, keep the bends mandrel, minimum number, and minimum angle, and 3" or bigger. Go big on the muffler inside diameter, say 3.5". Burn Stainless sells oval tubing if ground clearnce on the side is an issue. I'd even try stepped pipes going from 2.5 at the 02 housing and step up every so often. There might be some benefit in wave reflection from the abrupt cross sectional changes I'd bet. I'd like to try an expansion chamber (like an inverted venturi) to fool the engine into thinking there's a shorter exhaust then there really is (pulse tuning), pushing the power band up higher. A divorced wastegate routing I'm sure also has a nice advantage in minimizing flow disruption. Then at least you could brag about improving the pressure drop and scavenging of the exhaust, while still getting that individual look. :thumb:

ive been looking at exhausts, my car is stock, besides Blitz DD BOV, and K&N intake. My next mods are of course, intercooler piping, and exhaust (in no particular order yet) My question is...what should I do first? Also, I dont understand the whole O2 housing eliminator deal. Is it good to eliminate the O2? As far as an exhaust I want a sound that is quiet, deep, and not fart-cannon like.

if you got a 2g id just take a weekend and some tools and port the o2 housing you have now. maybe a nice N1 catback should do you just fine if you can make your own exhaust which would be so much cheaper. cost me 314.00 to make a whole turboback system on my own.

I would personally do the exhaust first, especially if you are going to the whole thing. Follow that up with the intercooler pipe upgrade(s) (if you do just the upper, or both) then whatever after that (most likely a turbo upgrade). You'll notice a significant power/torque increase with the whole exhaust done, more so than the intercooler piping IMO. Or at least I did and I did it intercooler piping then exuast.

and I also wish I knew how to weld because making an exaust for a 2g cannot be that difficult, so would have done it on my ride if I had the tools/ability.

the way i see it, either way you do it, exhaust then piping, or piping then exhaust, the last thing you install of the two will give you the biggest gain b/c it completing higher airflow you are going for...just my thoughts. how would i go about making my own exhaust???

Forget that, do a 14b an 1g bov first, then a 190 pump.

I have been running a dual 3 inch exhaust for 6 years. I don't run a conventional muffler, rather baffles are installed in the end of each 3 inch pipe. Flows like an open pipe but meets NHRA noise standards, street baffles are available also. Exhaust exits in front of the rear tires. I'm not sure the system is really worth the extra weight but the sound is distinctive. :dsm:

i agree... i have a 3" in/out 40 series on my exhaust.... sounds pretty low and mean,

I think possibly the oval piping but i haven't heard much about it and how hard is it to get a mandrel bend on it? Also, i know this sounds rather dumb and stuff but i'll be hooking up a propane system in the exhaust if need be for a flamethrower exhaust. I think it'd look hella sick seeing flames shoot out the side of the car and just for the records, i could care less about what a car looks like just as long as it can perform. Looks are second to performance. So on that note, i dont wanna have a muffler that will melt to pieces when on fire :p I have made my own race muffler but that is "Race" only so i wont use it (it's all metal and no packing, it's a scavenging muffler yet doesn't restrict flow and doesn't increace or decrease the piping diameter or flow ;) Kinda trick, look half assed but it works like it's supposed to. But yeah, muffler can't have low heat parts and needs to be a canister and sound deep, not ricey. Also, about the heat sheilds on the quarter panels, and good way to mount them flush or so that they wont melt the paint as they heat up? Thanks.

The oval S.S. pipe comes in straight ($32/ft) or 45*,60*,90* mandrel bends ($80). Pricey but an option for clearance issues. I've run a Flowmaster muffler before on my eclipse with a 2.5" pipes. It was a real nice way to flow restrict my engine, I'd pass on that piece of trash and stick with straight thru mufflers.

Propane tourch huh, not bad. I've already got flames coming out my exhaust thanks to the HKS VPC and a test pipe, all for free :D Cheers.

So what is ur setup in which you're getting flames? I'm assuming it's between shifts under hard boosting. I wanna have flames at idle and low revs cause i get pissed off when i get ricers thinking they are the sh!t with their little honda's and integra's. Flames often times shuts em up, that and a BOV, hahah or an awd burnout :D But the oval piping i'm assuming flows the same CFM and they got 3 in to oval and back again fittings. I could prob use the oval piping to clear the axle and snake up into the quarter panel but do they have oval y pipes or would i have to fab my own?

I think you should just port your O2 out aswell. If you really want a quality made, deep sounding, orgasim while driving exhaust put out the money for a Extreme Technologies/Thermal R&D. They can be found on Extreme Motorsports catalog. I paid around 1,200 for my turbo back (i know i know) but you should see it. It is a work of art.

Hmm, lets see, yes flames between shifts. The DSMLink stutterbox launch also gives flames off the line too, muhahaha. :D On the same page as the oval pipe they sell all kinds of round to oval transitions ($50 for 3"dia). They have every shape of transition, venturi, mandrel bend, or merge collector to make any exhaust system you could dream of. All you need is a chop saw, good person to weld it, and a good imagination :thumb:

I must see pictures!!
I'm doing the same, but goin from 3 to dual 2 1/2 they are gonna come out right before the rear tires.
