Is this bad? Someone said something about these causing problems if they're indented like so.

Being a cheapskate, when mine looked like that, I just filed it smooth again. And, as above, the dimple throws off your adjuster setting.
 
I change everything in my timing are , i chose to be cheap and paid for it in the end not doing it right
in the first place, i learned when in doubt change it.
