So I have my block at a shop locally for machine work, I asked the guy what he charges for rotating assembly only and he quoted 950 labor. That seems like a a lot for installing pistons and some bearings. Am I crazy? That is not including machine work.

I want to say most shops I have had work on shortblocks charged $800-$850 for machine work AND assembly.

950 is just assembly, haven't seen what im paying for machine work. 950 just to mic the crank and install the bearing and pistons seems crazy to me. idk

I will also say I don't trust most shops out there to properly put together a high power 4g63. That's why this last go round I just coughed up the money and had Curt Brown build me one.

This is Raif at rrt motor sports...he knows his stuff with dsms and evos. He has a 8 second Evo

So $950 for assembly, you have no idea what you are paying for machine work, and you obviously have to buy the parts?

Yup, I'm running Eagle rods with wiseco hd Pistons. Figure 1000, haven't bought bearings. So he said 100 more for bearings plus whatever for machine work. So figure 2500 plus probably

What he charges in machine work would be the deciding factor for me. More than a couple hundred and I'd be taking my nearly $3k elsewhere, but that's just me.

Well boys I decided to keep the oem mains for now as I'm only shooting for 500-600whp, I've been reading that the factory mains can handle more than that and have done so. I didn't want to change the geometry of the lower end with a line hone etc. That's my logic , if it's not broke don't fix it .... those eagles won't handle that much more abuse anyway.

Eagles have made over 900whp so yes they will.

As a reference, I paid $1,456 in machine work. That didn't include any parts, assembly, freeze out plugs, or piston ring filing. That was in Oct. 2016.

The eagles will do you fine...especially since you already have them. tim zimmer made 1000whp on eagles. But if your paranoid, (not the builder) i understand, i went to turbo tuff's this time around.

Your new builder sounds reasonable. I think i was in my first built long block... around 1100 for machining, and500-600 assembily, Thr machinist was not the builder in my case. And thats not including me supplying the parts.

Good god that's expensive. I think I spent 700 on my last machining, and that was bore hone, line hone, balance, cut 2 flywheels, cut head, Polish crank, deck block.
That's what I'm saying..... jeez guys, machining shouldn't cost that much. I'm running stock main bolts, he's suggesting I run arps with a kiggly girdle. I was certain the block had to be line Honed. He's says it not needed. Shouldn't I be safe at 600whp with eagle rods with stock mains?

Eagle rods stock mains have done over 700whp. Kiggly girdle and arp mains require line hone.

Im building my block as we speak. Wiseco pistons and eagle rods shooting for 600 ish whp. No worries here.

Where did you get it done at? I need a stroker motor setup and was thinking bill at Apex but not after a bad review recently and some in the past on chittowndsm.

Class One INC?

I believe eagle has their rods rated at 1000. I wouldn't take them that far personally, but you can certainty make power with them.

And holy crap, a lot of you guys are getting ripped off by your machine shops.

They are rated for 600, but have been pushed to 1000, the eagle extreme duty are rated for 1000

The regular are rated for 1000 on their site, and the upgraded are rated for 1200. I'm 99% sure the only difference is the rod bolts.

I've yet to see a rod bolt snap with regular arp2000 in engines turning under 9,500-10,000. The added exhaust pressure in turbo engines adds some cushion to the exhaust stroke. That helps avoid tension failures. Most rod failures I've seen in non fatigued rods in 4g's is in compression.
