Shifter weight that is on the trans/counterweight/hammer head [Merged 10-6]

I had to cut it off to clear the 1G lower radiator hose. Car shifts just fine (it is a TRE transmission).

Like Defiant said, if you don't shift weakly, you will have no problems. You don't need to bash it into gear, however ;)

Im trying to remove the counterweight on the transmission without just cutting it off to test the car with a blank aluminum spacer.

It appears to be held on by a pin, but before I hammer too much on this thing, If anyone knows what holds the weight to the shaft, let me know.

I have a feeling its just a pin thats rust-welded in there.

It certainly appears to be a separate piece to me.....If this isn't what you meant, im fine with that.

Notice the two different colors and the separation that makes it look like two pieces.

Also note the hole on the side which also can be seen from the other side (which makes me think there is a pin there.

problem is, I can't punch out the pin, I can't get in there enough to get a good look into the hole, and I can't figure out how to remove the whole assembly from the car.

thoughts? Im just not cutting it off unless there is no other way.

i heard that along with the smaller intake manifold and TB, and plastic BOV and 7 bolt crank design, that it is an redesigned part originally designed for the 1g that made its way on the 2g.

i also read somewhere in the slew of www.dsm(insert_here).com sites, that the problem with the 1g tranny was internal and this was a step further thats not needed.

I had to cut mine off because it was hitting the lower intercooler pipe for my 16G install. Many people have chopped theirs off also with no ill effects. You can try knocking out the pin, but the counterweight may be pressed on there as well. Just get a hacksaw and cut it off, of if you're dead set against that, remove the tranny and you'll have plenty of room to work

Ok, so I finally got the 14b in and started it up, all went well. Tried to shift into reverse wouldn't budge. 2nd and 4th, same problem. Goes into 1st, 3rd, and 5th no problem. Linked it back to the big weight attached to the shifter on the tranny, it's hitting my goddamn intercooler pipes. These are the pipes included in the RRE install kit. How the hell do I fix this? I need help fast.

when i put on my 14b my piping hit that counter-weight too.....i just hacked it off and i haven't had any problems shifting. I've seen a few others who have done the same.

Ok, I'd be happy to do that, but what did you hack it off with? I've got access to quite an assortment of tools, so what would you recommend? Also, does anyone know if this can cause any problems?

I cut mine off when i put my b16g on. I haven't had any problems with shifting either. Use a dremel with a cut off wheel or something like that. Its not too hard to get rid of :)

That weight is in my way for new turbo intake in my 2.4 in a 2g swap.I just took a cutter wheel and buzzed off the weight but left a round part about same diameter as the round part underneath. It looks like it has a rollpin in there.
So couple of questions..
If I take the rollpin out will the part underneath come off the shaft or something and if I buzz that weight off level by cutting the shaft level is that a good thing to do or not?
I guess could take a pic if that helps make it clearer.

I am sure it won't interfere much anymore but was just going to try to make it a bit cleaner.I can be picky sometimes.:)

the other part of the weight you can not remove IMO. at least not without enough work that you'd be better off adjusting the intake.
it moves up and down not just rotates, it's part of the tranny.

Let me guess... FP 4" intake? Or something similar with an offset coupler? Your offset coupler has to be straight up and down, not throwing the pipe over the tranny. the weight is one thing, but if you have clearance issues with the shifter mech, you need to move the pipe.

I looked searched around and could not find and answer, but remember reading about it once a year or two ago. Question: there is a counterweight or something similar on the tranny shift mechanisim, is it needed? Could I just hack the thing off? How would this affect shifting? In case anyone is wondering why:

I am going to turn my intake pipe (dejontoon VPC style pipe) upside down and that should place my airfilter right into the bumper opening and then relocate my battery (odyssey PC680) on its side where the airbox use to reside. Then place my alky/water resivour where the battery use to go. IE goal is to place as much weight as far foward in the car as possible (FWD).

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Alot of 2g guys hack the counterweight off anyway when they switch to a 6bolt engine. If 2g guys use the 1g thermostat housing, the radiator hose runs into where the counterweight is, so they hack it off. There are no mechanical side effects and most people dont even notice a difference after hacking the weight off. I am going to cut the weight off mine when i get closer to finishing my 6bolt swap.
Hope this helps!
